Well the N64 allowed for MP3 compression for music, or even Midi if you wanted to go smaller, so the score would fit no problem. The FMVs could be compressed as there weren't many in TR1 or 2, but at a pinch they could have substituted screenshots played over the audio as a few N64 ports did. It would have been very possible with the space, it's just a matter of the engine running on the hardware.

I just don't think it would have been possible.

Granted, Resident Evil 2 did it, but that was late in the N64's lifecycle with a hell of a lot of compression.
2 and a bit years before, with FMV and MP3's on a hypothetical Tomb Raider 64?
In my opinion, not a chance.

I'd have probably thought the expansions to be a better chance to have been on the console instead.
No FMV's, just a few levels, and I think because of this, some of McCree's tracks could have just fit onto a cartridge as well.

Golden Mask 64..

The size of the textures would have to have been halved and the n64 can't hold as much of them even then. It would have been really ugly

The Nokia N-Gage version of TR I has no music and only screenshots of the FMVs with subtitles. I can imagine that at least when it comes to the FMVs that's how the N64 version would've looked like. Music would either be compressed MP3 or MIDI (the original music was created with MIDI files anyway).

I think Toby Gard himself mentioned there were plans for a N64 game, didn't he? In one of the interviews I read some time ago on a website... the one where he said he thought Tomb Raider 2 looked dated when it was released...

I'm sure they could've fit TR1 or TR2 on an N64 cart given some sacrifices. Level geometry might not have been as complex, especially for background geometry. Maybe there would've been a greater amount of fog in TR2, or animations would've had less frames.

A lot of people are saying it wouldn't have been possible, period. I can't agree with that. Caveats would've had to have been made, but I do think a playable version of TR2 could've been on the N64.

Gosh I can't find that interview with Toby (at least I believe it was with Toby) about Tomb Raider where I think he said something about the port (that he was given a choice, either stay and do the port or leave the studio, or something like that), I know he said something about Tomb Raider 2 looking dated in that interview, it was not long after he left Core and around the time he was releasing his game...

I found an interview on Gamasutra, but it's not the one...

And if it really got bad, they might need to start chopping off or condensing levels, but I doubt that'd be necessary at least for TR1.

But Resident Evil 2 consists of an enormous amount of prerendered backgrounds, which I believe take most space of the game. Tomb Raider on the other hand uses only a small amount of textures that don't take as much space. In case of Tomb Raider most space is taken away by FMVs and audio files. Both of them can be rather easily replaced with low quality ones or even removed.

The TR1-2 team was pretty amazing with compression though. They could easily fit a massive level in a tiny memory of Sega Saturn, then PSX hardware. With their knowledge I think they were capable of providing an N64 copy of the game.

Are you sure he didn't mean the SEGA Saturn version of the game?

No, I'm pretty sure he meant a N64, albeit not the second game, but the first one... I will try looking for that interview later.
