Same issue here on win7, restarting tomb4 and exiting again usually works.
However sometimes the screen just stays black and I have to ctrl+shift+esc to start the task manager hoping it appears otherwise having to alt-tab like crazy to find it and force end the process. Quite annoying. |

Same here.
Not always but often. It currently happens with the testversion of my ORC level and with my MoA game. It somehow does not happen with the folder in which I have created my ORC level. That tomb4.exe is set to compatibility WinXP Service Pack 3. Perhaps that has something to do with it. |

It seems to happen sometimes with game crashes. It's an easy fix though! Just use ctrl+Alt+Delete to open the task manager, go to the Services tab, select the Explorer.exe process, and click the End Process button. Then go to the applications tab and click the New Task... button. The Explorer.exe process should almost always be brought up immediately already, so click OK and you should be ready to go!
Of course, depending on the user language choice, the buttons will be in your native language settings, but it's still the same process. One way to avoid that problem with NGLE versions is to have the game set to one of the soft fullscreen settings, but I myself don't use it because I end up with horrible screen tearing problems with it. |

Soft Full Screen seems to make this happen less, but it still happens from time to time.
Restarting tomb4 and closing it also does the trick for me. Why do you have this though? |

I run TRLE/TRNG in Windows 7 and I've never had that happen... I would think it's a GPU/driver thing, though I've gone through both ATI and NVidia cards and I've never experienced this issue.

I might be wrong but I seem to recall it starting happening ever since Windows 10 broke fullscreen support for old games. Not sure but maybe Paolone added some workaround to fix that, but broke taskbar meanwhile.
On my end it tends to happen always when I quit tomb4.exe using alt+f4 |

I was fiddling with those compatibility settings when I started getting a black screen (and at the same time a frozen game). It started to happen quite often.
Haven't had that black screen since I set it to WinXP, so it stayed that way. For me it does not matter how I close the game. It happens a lot either way, including whe game crashes. |
