At the very least, it's doable in NGLE, there's a "Rename" button in the object selection list window.

Doesn't it get lost when re-building the WAD? Or maybe it's just upon reloading. I know there's something like that when you edit an object to add collision to it (Objects menu > Edit object).

Question

Will current NGLE/TRNG prj files be compatible with the new editor?

I remember trying to load one of my current prj's in the older version of this editor and that didn't work.
While my old Himalayan Mysteries prj's did work. But those didn't have the TRNG specific triggers and all that in them. Those were made with just NGLE and TREP.

Not yet, I think. Currently the goal is to have compatibility with the original TRLE, but once Paolone provides documentation of the NGLE PRJ format they should be able to implement support really quick.

By support I mean importing it to TombEditor, to be later saved as PRJ2 (and WAD converted to WAD2)

Currently PRJ importing was drastically imported. Textures are working well and we've solved some bugs (present in old winroomedit but someway ignored ).
Prj2 will be the only format allowed for saving. For objects, instead, you will have the choice between WAD and Wad2.

Ooh... I might have missed the memo... does that mean Tomb Editor is a complete editor, including the ability to edit WADs as well? Thus making WadMerger and strpix redundant?
