I know that on AAA titles these days, software companies appoint "ambassadors" to work solely with the development company throughout the development period of a game. (ME: Andromeda // Autodesk was one recent example I read about, but don't forget you have AMD and Crystal Dynamics with TressFX).

Maybe... that makes sense, since the video game industry probably became a major client to all the 3D graphics software developers once 3D in video games started kicking in for good. And when at first there weren't that many video game developers it was easier for software developers to maintain relationships and offer support, including file format documentations...
