Is the family essentially the Wii Mini? That doesn't have GBC ports either.

No there was a 'redesign' before the Mini. It was the exact same system minus the GC ports.

They took out GC backwards compatibility too. IIRC it wasn't really any cheaper than the regular version anyway though.

Actually no they can't even take that out since the Wii is literally a higher clocked GC. Fun fact about the WiiU, the hardware supports native GameCube backwards compatibility, the only thing making it impossible is the disc drive which can't accept the smaller disc size.

Nintendo said they took it out.

While the new Wii console retains exactly the same sleek look and same dimensions as the original Wii*, it is slightly reconfigured to remove backwards compatibility with Nintendo GameCube titles and controllers and offer maximum value in the here and now!

Bad news Nintendo seemed to have made a mistake with their prior article.

"The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically - it is not compatible with any other Wii U software. The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion."

I'm definitely not going to buy it now.

Pretty big mistake to make!

Hi everyone, buy this to play all manner of games you could use with a WiiU Pro controller. Also works on Wii!

I mean... it doesn't. And you can only use it with Smash Bros. Our bad.

I own that model. You can easily differentiate it by it's model number, as it is different from GC compatible ones. The panel on the top is now part of the entire case and does not open.

Strangely enough, if you pry the top part off, you can find four round holes, indicating that the parts required for GC controllers is supposed to go there.

If I'm not mistaken, the capability to play GC games is still there, it just does not have the internal hardware to play the games, which I think is just the controller ports. I think I remember seeing Youtube videos of people ripping the Gamecube ports out of an old Wii, and placing it into the new, non-GC one, and having it work perfectly. Could be mistaken though...

I haven't had any blinking red light issues with the console since leaving it unplugged for 24 hours. Thanks to those who helped!
