And how about extracting the animation from the TR1 betas, could it work (seeing as the item is present in some of them in both form closed and opened, I always assumed the animation was here too)? Just a thought.

You can see the deleted grenade, electric torch and and also PDA at 6.21 on this Beta TR1 video.

Not only does the PDA open up as an animation, but you then have a separate program showing a 3D map of the area that Lara is in.

It would take a lot of work to put that back into a custom level of TR1.

Oh I see. This new added functionality should be complicated to implement indeed.

As far as I know, the map code is stripped out of release builds. I assume it was used for internal testing. You can add the item to the main menu in the final version of TR1-3. If you select the map the anim is played but no 3D map is shown so it's useless.

Cheers.

^ Can this video be trusted? The Natla map menu looks valid, but I see the video was made by GreatestTR, who is known for lying and making fake alpha/beta vids.

The whole point about the PDA is that it was not necessary, as we could memorise the level very easily and explore it easily as well. So it never became part of the final TR games.

The map is really like that. The beta can be downloaded (there was a thread somewhere in the TR1 section) and ran through DOSBox, and you can test the map yourself.

And the map basically shows the level the way it is built out of rooms, so I still think they removed it because some areas would be shown as spilt in strange-looking ways in the map view.

The compass is useful for writing walkthroughs. Though it makes more sense in TLR.

KAYAK ROLL in the Madubu Gorge TR3....

The story behind this one was that there is an animation that gives a roll underwater and back out again, but was never used. There is no real reason or advantage for Lara to roll in the level that we could think of, other than look good. Likely that's why the designers decided not to use it in the actual level.

I do know someone that got it working though (cough, cough...me ), see video below...

So the Kayak roll does exist after all! It's mentioned in the official guide but for years I thought that I'm not skilled enough to pull it off and then I thought that it was just a myth. According to the guide it would've been useful for evading spike traps. Is this true? Can you roll through spikes without taking damage? The video makes it look like rolling takes Lara forward for the length of one square.

I can't see the animation, but doesn't it make here go 1 square to the side? That would make sense for avoiding spike traps...
