3DS is a Studio 3D Max file.
A professional 3D object creator and animator. Quite expensive.
But perhaps old version can now be downloaded legally for free.
I do not know which other programs are capable of opening and editing 3DS files for animations.

Perhaps the Milkshape program I mentioned earlier is better in this case since, as far as I know, it is a free program.

Red face

Sorry about that , i meant .3ds extension, which is indeed used by 3D Max. Since i don't know anything about animating or modeling i don't know if there is free software that can edit .3ds files. :\ Maybe Blender?

I think the better option would be to use Fexanim to export the object and Milkshape to edit it. Fexanim should be compatible with TR2. I cannot use that program in Win7 x64 though, throws errors trying to open any .TR2 file, maybe i lack some needed files? I downloaded it from aspidetr site though...

I tried Fexanim but I get every time an error, if I try to open a TR2 file

Sadly , I have no idea how to do something like this. I already wrote some people who could might help me out, but I had no success
So I started this thread, that hopefully someone with experience could help me with this
The simple answer is: you can't - at least not full-fledged, original cutscenes. The cutscene camera anims seem to be hardcoded into the CUTxx.TR2 files in a way that Dxtre3D can't change.

The complex answer: you can (attempt to) change everything but the movement of the camera, however. (I'm speaking about Tomb Raider 3, but it should be the same for Tomb Raider 2, too)

- Download TrePhoenix, and unzip into your your Dxtre3D directory
- Use TrePhoenix's TR2TRE feature to generate a *.tre file - i.e. a Dxtre3D project of the cutscene you want to 'edit'
- This gives you an untextured project with the geometry of the cutscene. You MUST use that cutscene TR2 as a base file.
- You can now modify the geometry and retexture it as you like. You can place whichever statics you want to decorate the scene
- The LARA object MUST be placed exactly where it was in the original cutscene, in the original direction - it is what contains the camera animation data. Use FexInspect on the base file to get an idea
- Any other animating objects must also be placed exactly as they are in the original cutscene
- Triggers don't work

If you know how to edit 3DS animations, you can also go ahead and modify the animations - this is a massive pain in the ass however, since the animations are created to align with the camera movements (which can't be changed)

Using this limited effect, you can still create beautiful cutscenes: use an existing cutscene as a reference and edit the crap out of it.
- For example, one could edit the pre-City Lara meets Sophia cutscene from TR3 to make it a generic meeting scene between any two characters in any setting.

Oh my dear, this is going to be not easy. Thank you for these informations. I've never done something with animations, but I would like to give it a try .
@Titak can this milkshape program convert the files for TR2?

Milkshape is just a "generic" animation program, not a tool created for TR.

What is the error exactly?

0.4 is not a valid floating point value.

Change your regional settings to English, so the decimal sign is . instead of ,
That should fix that floating point error.
