Nope. E3 is no public convention. Its for business and press people only. Otherwise you wont be able to attend.

I believe the public can come, but they have to buy tickets. I think that the press and business people have special passes to some of the more exclusive stuff. I might be wrong, though.

Probably Yeah ComicCon is open to the Public.
For example here the two biggest gaming conventions

E3: Business and Press Convention
Gamescom: Consumer Convention

"E3 is a trade-only event and is not open to the general public."

I'm sure it's as much a trade event as the ECTS used to be in the UK. I used to take my friends with me to that. It was a trade event, not open to the public (or under 18s), I used to attend as press and my friends would just tag along as members of the public, they just wanted to play the latest games and get free stuff. In the five or six years I attended the show no one ever questioned me or them, no matter how much we abused the free food & drink facilities in the press room.

I bet getting into E3 is child's play.

It probably is, despite the outrageous ticket price.

Either way, I fully intend on going one of these days.

I can't deny E3 is a spectacle I wouldn't mind being a part of at least once. But I'd get annoyed at all the people there. People are like that, they get in the way and talk at you and stuff
