For me, its a tossup between 2 and Underworld.
Tomb Raider 2 (while having way too many human enemies) introduced more weapons with their own uses such as the Harpoon gun and M16, added Vehicles, had ENEMIES with vehicles, that also let Lara actually take enemy Snowmobiles after killing the Drivers, also we had the Dragon, my favourite of the classic Series final bosses and we had the whole floating Islands that is still one of my favourite finale locations. Tomb Raider Underworld gave us the most agile Lara with new moves, got mostly rid of the easily visible ledges the rest of LAU had, while I'd rather have ammo pick ups and secrets, the limited weapon ammo brought back resource management, the Bike was the best Vehicle in the entire series and the Locations were also amazing, honestly finishing Underworld makes me somewhat sad, a bit like when I finish AOD as they're both the last games of their respective Lara's and everything that happened after doesn't help. I've only recently stated this in another thread but my favorite most definitely is Tomb Raider III.
Why? Because the game offers so much diversity in every aspect. It has Lara's largest arsenal ever, climate changes for each of the 5 locations, great balance between indoors and outdoors, great balance between animal and human enemies as well as short range and long range enemies, many unique traps, multiple vehicles, many bosses and so forth. Above all that it was very difficult (which I always see as a good thing, unless the difficulty is caused by glitches or game mechanics not working properly), Lara had the best attitude ever in my opinion and also had the best looking model up to AOD, it's the last game with the magical Judith Gibbins,.... I could probably go on forever but I think you get the point |

Short answer:
TR2......? Long answer: This is a tough decision to me, since my actual favorite is always different. Anyhow, it's usually one of the first 3 games. It often depends on my mood. However, I used to end up saying that the second one is the dearest to me. It's hard to explain, why. It's not even the most TR-ish. Maybe the locations, the platformer side of the game, and the whole atmosphere affects me subconsciously. I don't know, really. Venice comes to my mind immediately, I can almost hear the violin; we swim in canals, jump between awnings, small balconies. Or even chandeliers. I'm digging it! And then there's the sunken Maria Doria. Even if the idea is a little bit unrealistic, this place is amazing! It's so much fun to explore every single inch of the ship. In the meanwhile you cannot not realize that Lara would go anywhere, she would be able to do everything to reach her goals. In Tibet we ride a snowmobile like a badass, and Xian has lots of challenges for us, which is the icing on the cake. Furthermore, we get an awesome, memorable bossfight at the end. The game is full of with action, too. I don't really like that, yet I don't mind it somehow. I love TR2 nonetheless - this makes me wonder though... Hmm, whatever... I guess, thanks to that, I started to fall in love with the double uzis in this game, they are really useful and cool. The game could be even better mixed with TR1's level design (and its overall TR-ishness), and TR3's diversity, I guess - because in those games these are the things that I like. See?? For me it's hard to choose, my thoughts are all about the other two games now! In my mind all three games are sitting on a continuously rotating wheel. It's always different what's on the top, they are not listed below each other. But the point is I LOVE them, they inspire me, too. Okay, better if I stop here before I would start to rewrite everything. |

Tomb Raider 2 is still the best one. Why? Simple:
-Judith Gibbons voicing Lara & Shelley Blond grunts sfx. -Lara's Mansion and Winston. -Best in-game and FMV Lara model. -Music by Nathan Mccree. Venice violins ...nuff said. (and that title music...OMG) -Zip lines -Long lasting flares. -Wetsuit and Bomber jacket -dragon statues (best secret system) -and did I mention speedboats in Venice w/ the classical violins? i have more than one so i'll list them in order
1. TR Angel of Darkness - amazing story, soundtrack and atmosphere, lara is a complete badass that does't give a ****. game looked amazing for early PS2 and had some of my favorite level designs in the entire series. sure it has it's gameplay faults but i let that slide because to me this is the last time i saw the real lara 2 TR4 - egypt, nuff said, and it was my first game that i bough for my playstation 3. TR Anniversary, sure i absolutely love the original but this one is probably my favorite of Crystal's games 4. TR 3 - hardest in the series to me, still haven't beat it without cheats 5. TR 2 - loved the underwater levels, china and the mythology of the dagger , easily the best in the series, would be higher but its mainly that i wish it was made with TR4s graphics engine instead XD |
