I didn't realize how much progress you made. All of this is inside Maya and it looks exactly like the in game presentation. I expected things like lights to be handled by the engine.

Are there any lights or is it just the baked shadows creating the illusion?

The game uses 3 illumination techniques:
1) Lights with customizable colour, inner and outer radius: they affect only characters and they are used for projecting real-time shadows.
2) Lights for objects (like doors, traps, moveables, etc.); if I remember correctly each object has 4 of these lights and you can customize only the colour and the position in a small area around the object itself. No shadows.
3) Vertex colours and shadow maps: they are used for static meshes and they are prerendered.

1 and 2 are stored inside the RMX file while 3 is inside the Z%% file.

That's not too bad. They didn't use much shadowmaps though? Is there a way to add more? Or update the current ones? Baked shadows aren't that bad thing, they just used very low res ones in these games, but if it's possible to update a 256x256 shadow map to 2048x2048 or something it's a nice graphics boost.

Exactly!
This experimental function will be included in next update of AoD EXE Multipatcher. It's very helpful for those who want to explore level maps but its side effect is that it kills the framerate on lower end computers.

Unfortunately I can't tell you an ETA because I don't have much free time in these months.
