Private Messages - are they private?
Greetings folks.
I'd like to clarify this point (again) as it would appear some folk are hearing conflicting stories. For the record. Your Private Messages are private. Moderators and Administrators cannot read your private messages. In fact, our forum software (vBulletin) prohibits them from doing so. If you have any doubt about this, you can verify this by contacting www.vbulletin.com, the makers of our software. They will be more than happy to answer your questions. Now. In the event of a serious incident, and by serious I am talking about an infraction of UK law, I - and only I - can access the PM database and extract information pertaining to any specific complaint. This information is then passed onto the police. The ability to perform this action ensures that we - as a predominately young population - remain perfectly safe from the many unsavoury characters that peruse the Internet looking for victims. And let me say this, I have personally prevented this kind of attack in the past. On a few occasions, had it not have been for my actions, our members would have been put at risk. It is my responsibility ALONE to this community to ensure they remain perfectly safe, but without infringing their privacy, and ONLY I have the ability to do this. So. Once again, to clarify. Moderators and Administrators cannot read your PMs. I, and only I, can access our database (outside of vBulletin) in the event of a serious emergency. In future, if folk have a question or query, direct that question or query to someone in a position to know the facts of the matter. Carry on. |

As you are the forum leaders I should take your word for it.

The fuss began because two members brought it to my attention. Since you were one of those members, I'm both surprised and curious that you need to ask that question.
Of course, you don't need to take my word for it. Please contact vBulletin, the makers of our software, if you are in any doubt. |

So,does this mean in the case a member feels he/her might be in danger and report it to you, only then you'll access the pm database?

ONLY THEN will I determine what further action needs to be taken. If I feel there is a real threat to our community, I will access that member's account server-side and retrieve the relevant information. That information is then passed onto the police. I hope that clearly and adequately defines my responsibilities here, because I am most upset folk seem to think we have the ability to access PM boxes at whim. Again, if you're in doubt, contact vBulletin, the makers of our software. |

I can't believe that people would fret over this in the first place. I am sure tlr has better things to do with his time than read 100's of PMs everyday
Thanks for clearing that up tlr |
