Imo, it wasn't important at all. Cool little feature I suppose. But not anything of huge significance. In the trilogy it was a major story element though, with it burning down and all.

I guess they just wanted to stay true to Legend. Which I guess is ok.

Definitely not, they were trying to tie it to Legend. Legend may have had some inspiration from the movie, but Anniversary's manor is almost exactly the same as Legend's.
