Question What has Core Design done wrong?

I’m obviously inspired by the “What has Crystal Dynamics done right?” thread lol.

I feel like Core has done a lot of things right, but does that mean the Classics are flawless? Nope.

My two cents:
• The inconsistencies between the TR4 FMVs and in-game.
• Making cutscenes in TR4 and TR5 unskippable.
• Relying too much on keys and switches in TR2-3.
• Having obscure puzzles with new mechanics in TR4-5 that weren’t mentioned in the manuals.
• The TR4 Catacombs double rope jump. Enough said.
• TR3 relying on cheap traps to give the player an artificial challenge.
• Darkness Raider III on the PS1.
• AoD’s development.
• The Louvre cutscene with Kurtis.
• TR2-3 Lara’s personality.
• Chronicles Young Lara underbiob scene.

Hahaha love this thread and I love that you got inspired by the CD appreciation thread lol

Here's my list of things:
- keeping the grid based level geometry for 5 years while games were all evolving and making use of the analogue controls.
- Lara sounding like an old woman on TRII and III
- obscure puzzles on TRIV
- new mechanics being introduced that made the game even slower (crouching was slow, corner shimming was slow, walking on tight rope was slow, rope swinging was slow), hurting the overall pace
- trying to kill Lara on TRIV
- Sexualised teenage Lara
- main villains that have the charm of a sandal on TR II, III and Chronicles.
- the very existence of TRAOD and how Lara is a walking glitch more than anything
- poorly implemented stealth mechanics in TRIII's Nevada and on Chronicles.
- Rope mechanics

There's probably more but that's it from the top of my head. But definitely trying to kill Lara was, for me, what shoulda been enough reason to get them replaced right then and there. Maybe we'd have gotten a proper AOD.

I think that the only thing Core Design did wrong was the development of Angel of Darkness. As far as I know, at one moment they had to restart works on it and thus they wasted a lot of time. Moreover, they were too ambitious with that game - they wanted to do something that was impossible to do using the time they were given by Eidos.

We don't have a main thread called "The past of Tomb Raider" and it wouldn't be fitting to start this thread anywhere else really, even if we looking in hindsight at Core and what they built xD
