my reasoning as to why the Maria Doria section is an excellent tomb section
It's pretty common TR knowledge to know that TR1 is all about tombs and TR2 kinda took a step back from the ancient civilization areas and made it a more modern-ish kind of game in terms of the levels. I know in Sheepman's TR2 Review he also pointed this out that many of the levels are not tombs at all, which i agree with. I do want to point out though that i think the Maria Doria levels are an excellent example of a good "tomb" section. Up until this section, every TR section was either a straight up tomb section (Egypt, Greece), or not one at all (Offshore Rig). And this is the first section that we have had where it is a tomb, but not from an ancient civilization, but rather a man made disaster, and with the exception of the human enemies, it demonstrates being a tomb rather well. The feeling of isolation and dread you get from playing these levels always sends chills down me. And between the heartbeat theme, and the echoes theme playing in the levels, i think this section does really well! (40 Fathoms and The Deck are two of my all time favorite levels) How does everyone else feel about this?

I enjoyed the Maria Doria section but it wasn't my favourite

The water levels really took off for me on the Maria Doria level. It was tough in places but pretty good and very inventive. People get far, far too hung up on the realistic aspects of the level - so mired in it that they often cannot appreciate what a good level it is.
For me, it is up there with Barkhang Monastery, Floating Islands, Opera House and Temple of Xian. |

I only enjoyed Maria Doria because there based it of the Andrea Doria

Whilst it is hardly in the 'tomb' spirit, I always wished the water levels had included a submarine. Cannot really explain why. |

yeah a submarine part would have been pretty cool, maybe like the ending of the deck could have involved that

I've not played anything beyond TRIV so I've never encountered this sub level.
All I meant was that the sequence of levels in TRII lent themselves very well to some submarine action. In fact, imagine a playable diving section in a diving vehicle of some sort... Out of interest, does the OP like all the levels in this section? I like most, but Diving Area was a bit hit-and-miss for me. Wreck of the Maria Doria is definitely the highlight. |

I LOVE the water levels. They're my highlight of the game. Apart from being fun, I love the spooky atmosphere you get from being trapped beneath the ocean, listening to the sound of heavy heartbeats.
I wouldn't say it's like a tomb, but I they share some similarities. And the level design is lovely. Last edited by Roux; 17-02-13 at 09:53. |
