Quick Tips:
  • Select a dark Ambient Room Color
  • Place a Sun in Every Room
  • Choose the Ambient Color as a darker version of your Sky Color (Dark Blue for a bright blue sky)
  • Choose the Sun Color for the Color of your Sun (mostly yellow-white ish)
  • For interior rooms, choose a dark Ambient color that fits the mood of the level (desert: dark brown, jungle cave: dark green, spooky: dark purple/red)
  • Choosing complementary colors also results in very cool schemes.

The key is to have a very dark Ambient Color (because this is the color of your shadows) and a contrasty brighter Sun Color.

For accentuations I put soft lights on walls and floors that have ivy or leaves.

I literally just use a dark ambience and add few suns of different colours (that fits the environment) to add some contrasts

but yea, tr-freak said it right.

I think lighting is the coolest part of designing levels!

I also recommend the tutorials suggested by Kapu, the first one has a couple of very useful tricks to get certain moods in the level!
