Fortunately they added the option to auto switch off after update so you can make it download at night or whatever. But you cannot do anything whilst it downloads. For me it takes about half an hour to complete. It is like trying to download to a memory card where you cannot so a background download. It's good to do on pc if your internet is playing up, (once i tried to download the burnout patch which was 400mb and my connection kept failing so i had to start again) but i've had no problems myself. It usually takes about 3 hours for mine to download.

Compared to the 360 it takes a lifetime to download and update, but 3 hours?! What connection are you on? Updated mine last night and it took no longer than half an hour (and that was with my housemate downloading crap upstairs on the same connection).
It now has the option to turn off the console once it's updated so just leave it doing it when you go to bed, you'll wake up and find it updated and turned off. |

Unless you get signed out of the network, then you come back in to an overheated black slab. Yesterday's update didn't take as long as it usually does for me.

What if the energy goes off while you're downloading the update?!
