Computer gets HOT.
Hiya
Two threads in one day! Woo! That's a record .. Anyways, I wanted to get advice about my PC hotting up? I'm a big fan of The Sims, I have all the Sims 2&3. When I play Sims 2 the PC plays smoothly and fine, but when I'm playing Sims 3 I can 'hear' it getting hot. By hear I mean the malware actually makes sounds, they sound like a Saw Blade going round and round .. The grfx cards fan? I have most of the graphics setting on high, it plays smoothly but it gets too hot and then the graphic card shuts down. Leaving me with a blank monitor and a message that states 'No VGA Input' when I try to turn the monitor on manually. I even get looped sounds coming through the speakers, the music gets stuck on one note and loops over and over .. I guess what I'm trying to ask here is, help? What should I do? Should I buy a component and upgrade my PC? My desktop is insured with PC World and they're 'What ever happens' policy. I got my graphics card replaced twice already for the exact same reason. When I tried to call them a third time, a few days after the second replacement, they said it couldn't be the card, and explained to me it possibly could be the tempreture; so I must clear out any space around it and dust it regularly, room tempreture also affects it .. Really? I really don't want to serve the computers needs, should be the opposite! I had this problem before, and it's still a percistent ****er! EscondeR recomended I get a fan, which I did, and it didn't help .. (btw not blaming here! ) What do I do? Did this happen to anyone? Should I buy a new graphics card? A new CPU (if that's possible ) .. ? Help! Btw I'm not all that computer litterate, and you may have to dumb it down .. Although I did manage to unscew the HDD today and plug it in fully! |

Download Realtemp and open it whilst performing normal tasks. It will record max temps for the CPU and GPU (you'll have to click on the GPU button to see the min & max). Let us know what they are (the max temps, mainly).
And BTW: Quote:

Dust acts as an insulator for heat, and can inhibit cooling systems (It can clog up fans). Seeing as it sounds like you've never done that before, I'd recommend doing it. It's not all that time consuming. Maybe 20 minutes tops.

But I've used RealTemp! Start up: - Just turned the PC on After about 10-15mins gameplay: Quote:
Nope, don't think so .. I mean other than a few updates and disk C may be a bit fuller, but other than that, no. I didn't add new hardware or anything like that if that's what you mean .. I don't trust myself with the specs! Btw here are some pictures of my set up so you can get the idea of the space it's in .. Temps are a little high for gaming, but nothing alarming. You need to add a fan to the rear, since I suspect the GPU is the culprit here. The heat generated by the GPU is simply being sitting there, with only the force of the CPU fan to pull it out. It's probably a 90/92mm fan, these can be had for about $8. Make sure you pick one with a noise rating in the 20~30 dB range, otherwise it'll end up sounding like a vacuum cleaner.
Speaking of vacuum cleaners, you shouldn't put your PC directly on the floor, that's the worst place for it. Since dust settles there, it's more likely to get sucked inside your PC. As far as the PSU goes, 250W is pitifully wimpy - I'm not sure you NEED it for your current hardware, but I'd recommend getting a decent 500W Antec or Corsair PSU. A quality power supply is a crucial part of building a long lasting system. The cheap pieces of crap that come with OEM systems are usually the reason that motherboards fail prematurely. |

http://i53.************/2vbnel4.jpg Add a 120x120 mm fan on the rear side (see a placeholder), check if you can add at least 92x92 or 80x80 fan on the front panel and remove that tube from CPU cooler. Thus you'll create a normal air flow from front to rear side through the CPU cooler. |

Right, I've settled for Newegg.com
1. Would [this] be good for the CPU fan? It's 90mm and 26.2 dBa + the reviews seem decent! 2. As for the PSU, I guess it won't be a bad thing to have a powerful PSU? A 500W? (It won't set my PC on fire will it?!). [This] one doesn't seem so bad, the reviews are awesome and free shipping! Kidding! Not doing it for the freebies, but because it's a Antec 500W one? There's a smaller 430W one, Antec aswell. If you can and know any better ones please suggest! Keeping in mind my knowledge of computer hardware is very small! @EscondeR: I have a Zalman fan that I bought for last time, although I measured it with a ruler from one edge to the otehr horizontaly and it came to 7.5cm = 75mm and diagonaly it measures about 105mm. .. 0_o I've searched it up on amazon (where I originally bought it) and they don't have a 75mm one but a 120 one ... Is my fan right as in my measurings being wrong? How are fans measured? Also where in the front do I place the fan?? There's a panel covering it + I don't see a space! The little grid in the bottom or above the HDD tray? Also I remember having only one extra spot for a fan cable, is there somekind of special dual cable? And I'll definatly remove that stupid tube (I hate it I swear ) Btw I hope you two agree with each other! Because I'm planning on combining your ideas together and hopefully getting rid of this problem forever! Or a very long time atleast .. ------------ I've also two concerns .. 1. Will chaning any of these components wipe my PC memory? Like restore it? -__- 2. Do you have any idea if this could void the insurance? I don't think so .. part of having a desktop is the ability to upgrade! No? Last edited by Wana b like Lara; 10-06-11 at 18:04. |
