Over 560 people have died this year in flooding along the rivers of eastern China, though the flood season has only just begun. Lasting from June through September, flood-season storms bring more rain than the rivers and tributary systems in this part of China can handle, which often results in disaster for residents in the flood zones. The Chinese government estimates that over half a million homes have been destroyed, another 1.3 million damaged, and over 2.3 million people have been evacuated.

This false-color Terra MODIS image of eastern China shows flooding of two major rivers — the Huai He (top) and the Chang Jiang (Yangtze, bottom). The waters appear dark red (from the sediment) and black. Flooded areas (shown in black or dark red) are concentrated around the Huai He: the lakes along it are normally much less pronounced, and the river itself is usually just a faint black line against the land. Flooding along the eastern and western ends of the Chang Jiang is also quite apparent; the surrounding lands are dotted with brownish-red spots of standing water where normally there isn't any. The land itself is a mottled orange, while clouds appear as white and bright orange. At the right side of the image, the waters of the Yellow Sea (top) and East China Sea (bottom) take on a silvery-blue sheen that is caused by the Sun's reflection (sunglint). This image was acquired on July 23, 2003.

Thumbs up

Hi tlr

Awesome picture! And congratulations for your 9001th post -- casually dedicated to the space odyssey?

Now you're on your way for the Grand Master of the Tombs title!
