Why Thor?
So here's a few theories on why Thor is being used here.
1. Nordic myth believes in several different levels of existance. Ásgarðr, world of the Æsir. [world of gods] Miðgarðr, world of humans. Muspellheim, world of the primordial element of fire. [Thailand, anyone?] Niflheimr, world of the primordial element of ice. [Sounds like the Artic.] Valhalla is Odin's hall with the Valkyries. However, could this be "Atlantis"? Now Midgard, would be where we live. Earth. -If- Underworld is going with the idea to rescue Lara's mother (which people have speculated, debated on, etc), Lara would have to go to the underworld to probably get Thor's hammer. The hammer is called Mjöllnir, and is quite a battle weapon. If Lara is expecting to go in gun's blazing to where her mother could be (an island, where once a brave many people are carried off in [Arthur, Tuwanku, Valhalla..]), she'd have to go in with the big guns. Thor's hammer would ensure she could a) get to her mother, and b) fight off any foes encountered in the underworld. Having Mjöllnir would also provide enough leverage to maybe come to a barter with the God/desses in exchange for her mother (if that was the goal). It also explains WHY Natla would be there. Natla, though evil, is a fallen warrior in all loose terms. Valhalla isn't exactly a good/evil type place, but a neutral fairground for when IF the world ends, the warriors are released and causes Ragnarok. I bet you any money, that the closer Lara gets to her goal, Ragnarok will near. So if Natla is released, it could provide her ample opprotunity to once again wreak havoc and try to use the scion (assuming that, the Valkyries and Odin don't have quite a strong hold on the said warriors) for her selfish uses once more. |

The real answer is simple: He is a god that possesses a well known, relatively small item (that can be searched for). How many other gods are famous for an item they carry? I guess one could search for Hercules thong, or Athena's veil, or Apollo's chariot, or Cupid's Bow...

They flipped a coin, heads for thor's hammer and tails for Barbie's pink ballet shoes.
Aren't you glad they got heads? |

Yeah it's as simple as that.... Odin is a much more interesting Norse God and in effect HE was the chief Norse God. They went with Thor instead because the hammer makes for a cool artifact for Lara to search and use. |

Just imagine: Lara: "Zip! Why did you send me to Mexico? It's bloody cold and it's raining. And I'm getting dirty !" Zip: "Because you want to find Barbie's pink ballet shoes. And they are here in Mexico." |
