Default PC Clean-up

Hello all!

I need your help for a thorough clean-up of this PC. I don't use it regularly so it sits unused for days maybe weeks, this has the knock-on-effect of drivers becoming out of date browsers needing to be updated and the added inconvienience of Norton telling me I need to renew!

I decided to ask here for help as you are all tech wizards and would know what should and what shouldn't come off. The machine does just need a good get rid of junk and programs that are slowing it down and preventing efficiency of use.

I would also like your input on getting rid of Norton- it is complete rubbish and a waste of space! What to replace it with and the next move from there!

Thank you for any help given!

It is about time something was done to free up this machine!

  • Get this: ccleaner.org
and RUN IT (use the registry cleaner part as well)
  • Get this (according to your product): Norton Uninstaller
and RUN IT (don't worry about saving the product key - you are already out of date - just run it and kill norton)
  • Run these two and report: ardiag.exe and diagnose.exe
  • Get (and install) this: Zone Alarm (free)
  • Consider whether to get a decent paid AV application such as Kaspersky (not the full suite - just the AV part) or a freeware application such as AVG or Avira. Between AVG and Avira free products - I recommend Avira as it can detect more types of threats

I know Bonjour is useless, I also have spyware doctor, is it actually any good or am I better without? The same with the Secunia PSI, that's pretty much a waste of space too.

Thank you for your help SJ!

Also downloaded avira like you recommended!

All is installed and working well! I can already tell the difference in the loading speed of programs and the desktop!

You can actually leave those:

Program:
"Microsoft Office 2000 component"
Publisher:
"(Not verified) Microsoft Corporation"
Entry path:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Entry name:
Microsoft Office.lnk
Program path & name:
"c:\program files\microsoft office\office\osa9.exe"
Enabled: [V]

Program:
N/A
Publisher:
N/A
Entry path:
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Entry name:
OpenOffice.org 3.0.lnk
Program path & name:
c:\program files\openoffice.org 3\program\quickstart.exe"
Enabled: [V]

From those two select one to leave, depending on what you're using often: MSOffice or OpenOffice.

Program:
"Gadwin PrintScreen"
Publisher:
"(Not verified) Gadwin Systems Inc"
Entry path:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Entry name:
Gadwin PrintScreen
Program path & name:
"c:\program files\gadwin systems\printscreen\printscreen.exe"
Enabled: [V] - Gadwin is a screen capture application. But for better performance you may want to have IrfanView instead - it's lighter and is run on demand, not always hanging in background.

All entries killed, and Video card updated!

Is that all that needs to be done?

Thank you for your help both!

pretty much from what I can tell, unless you have some applications and data that are no longer needed.

^ Generally yes, cleaning all sorts of junk and defragmenting the drives will also help. Use Diskeeper or Perfect Disk.

Check that you swap file (virtual memory) is placed on fastest drive, has enough space (1.5 RAM = MAX = MIN. In your case it must be 768 Mb or even 1Gb) and not fragmented also.
