Default Radeon 4850 Graphics Card question

Hi techy peeps

I have left my PC sitting idle for about 2 hours, at a screen resolution 1024 x 786.
Then I let it sit idle at a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 for another 2 hours.

The Catalyst Control Center reports that the GPU Temperature is at 80 degrees Centigrade, for both resolutions.

QUESTION .. Is this normal considering my PC is sitting idle ?

For information......

Radeon 4850 Graphics Card.
HP w2408h HDMI monitor. (Hewlett Packard )
AMD Phenom quad core CPU.

ALSO... yes, the graphics card, and heatsink is/are totally free of dust. I removed the card yesterday and checked it,
together with checking the CPU heatsink for dust too.

Catalyst Control Center image......

That's not dangerous for this video board, besides your GPU fan is reported at 24%. You can enable manual control and speed it up to 80% - more noise, but always cool. Unfortunately we can't alter smart control algorythm to boost the fan relatively, but more than set by default.

Besides, check what processes are running in your system, while you think it's "idle". What version of Catalyst do you have?

Enable Ati Overdrive and press Auto Tune button tolet the system adjust fan speed.

BTW, my ATI Radeon 4670 runs at 44 centigrade in "idle" mode with 3% fan speed.

to buy a better fan is a good decision. Because I know that with proper cooling when I play Oblivion at full power with 8800 gtx video card I get max 43–50 C.

^ The thing is 4800 series GPU must have a decent fan with speed auto adjustment.

quarrystile, what brand are your ATI GPU of?

No, not on stand-by/hibernate. Just on with monitor on too
I said "idle" as I meant I was not doing anything with it, gaming, etc.

EscondeR .....

I have version 9.3 Catalyst Drivers.

You can update to 9.4 - www.ati.amd.com

It can be: ASUS, Sapphire, Gigabyte, HIS, etc. What's yours?

Run ARDiag.exe and post the report.

Hi Alex, sorry I took so long

1 .. OK, I have updated to ver 9.4. I have GigaByte GPU

2 .. Enabled Ati Overdrive and pressed Auto Tune button.
But something happened and all I got were vertical green lines all the way across my monitor.
I left my PC for 15 minutes, but the green lines were still there.
I pressed ESC and got back to my desktop. Then tried auto-tune again.
This time I got orange'ish coloured vertical lines with an AMD logo in the lower left corner.
I left my PC for another 15 minutes, but I had to press ESC to get back to my desktop again.
I do not think the "auto-tune" should take 15 minutes or more, should it ??

3 .. Anyway I set my GPU fan to 50% and now my temperature is sitting at about 50 degrees C.

4 .. ARDiag results.

Copy the following text and paste it to your report AS IS!!!

Yes, I know. It is strange

Here is an image of my screen with the lines....
( This is exactly how it looks, although the green is "brighter" than in the image. The red is ALSO on the screen )

I can hear the fan speeding up, then slowing down occasionally. Then those lines disappear for about 2 seconds and I get a black screen.
Then the lines return. Then continues to do this "forever" ( lol ) until I hit the ESC key !

Two images of my Graphics card. This is the exact type I have.

I guess the square clamp in the lower image is to keep the GPU in
tight contact with the heatsink? Do you think it would be worh checking
this to ensure that the GPU is indeed actually in contact correctly, and to
ensure the "heat transfering compound" is there too?
I am beginning to suspect that the problem may lie here, as everything else seems OK.
