That's bacause DS games run in a lower resolution than the 3DS's screen.

IGN explains.

I just saw the 3DS for the very first time today, it didn't have a game running but it did have what I think was a 3D wallpaper, and I was bloody amazed on the quality and goodness of the 3D on it. I have to say Nintendo have done an extremly good job, and I'm proud of it and can't wait to get one myself.

I suppose some games benefit, but deffinately not all. Both of my Kingdom Hearts look better during gameplay, but Zelda: Spirit Tracks looks worse. Audio all together is pretty much a lot better.

Well I'm glad the audio is much better, as my current DS is still the original one that came out 2004/2005, sound still comes out the speakers okay but there's quite a bit of crackling, and the quality is bad.

^ I was so surprised how amazing the sound quality was, it really does sound like things coming at you behind and from the sides, the surround sound is great.
