Do you find we've become a more apathetic and isolated society?
I've realized the sheer amount of apathy and isolation I see everywhere that it's really making me wonder what are the implications of that? And what do you think is the root of this? I'm actually very much guilty of it myself but I feel it's because of reaching out to others so many times and encountering it that I eventually become the same way. So yea I'm just wondering if you think we've become more isolated and apathetic, what is the cause of it, and what do you think are the implications if it continues? |

Do you have more specific examples of this we can use as a start off point?

Ok here are some examples.
I've noticed most people with a boyfriend or girlfriend don't have any friends and they use that one person for all their socialization. Some people will only bring their significant other with them if they're meeting with a friend otherwise they won't ever meet with a friend. People spending more times on screens of various sorts (tv, cellphone, laptop, video games, etc) which used to not exist so socialization was more sought out as a form of entertainment. Even with neighbors I don't know many people who even know their neighbors whereas in previous generations even if you hated your neighbors you still interacted with them. The culture here in the U.S. is very pro-independence so I notice parents want to kick their kids out and live alone ASAP. Even if they don't want that they do it anyways because they feel it's "the norm." Family members that even though they're family will not visit one another. Americans have again a very independent mentality and I see it spread throughout the culture where everyone should love themselves before anyone else, and there is belief that you are all you have in this life. There is more distrust in American culture as opposed to other cultures such as European and Japanese. We also have more violence and fear in our culture which I think contributes to less trust and more apathy and isolation. The divorce rate has increased since previous generations. Which I don't necessarily think is a bad thing but it is another example of the prevalence of "I come first" and the "me" mentality. So yea those are some examples off the top of my head

This may not have any relavance but I think there's quite a ait of segration in this world. So many people are divided into groups based on class, age, wealth, intelligence, morals, occupation, race etc and I suppose you could say people with certain characteristics are isolated from those who are completely different.
