It's the best way to go, but when the development is costed and against the clock, you can guarantee that the people who want the easier save option will be catered to because they're the majority nowadays.
Most games these days provide both, but the autosaves tend not to be that frequent in some games, the start of a new area, a major event or a texture loading point. I am fine with that, I forget to save I can as usual just replay the last 20 odd minutes to get back there again. With more linear games the autosaves would be closer together, but I am hoping for something a bit more open world this time, where the areas are big enough to actually make exploration a challenge. My taste for linear games with lots of hand holding and hints is fast diminishing.

I literally lol'd at the first half of the OP.

I thought a demo leaked or something.

I want optional checkpoints and manual saves.

as im an old school gamer, playing videogames since i was 12, now im 23..
i played many games and ALL tr games,
the thing with tr1 crystals was great, really good saving system and it's for real gamers not stupid kids playing cod and dead island!

tr is suppose to be dangerous and hard game not for casual gamers!
anni, legend and unde were veeeery easy! so linear and so not tomb raider games!
so hell yeah for manual saving but not whenever we want! maybe we can have a notification like a sound, that u have the ability to save at certain points if u hate crystals, and yea i hate crystals too but a sound notification would be enough to let u know where u can save,

yea i know xbox kids playing games with rap music playing behind, well too bad for them.. they won't save.

im a real warmblooded gamer and a faithful tr fan, my point is.. manual save only at certain points kinda like tr1, end of discussion and if u don't like it go play barbie games

You sound so conceited, I can't.

Also, LOL @ the barbie sentence. Also, doesn't your idea kinda defeat the point of manual save? In a way, it's still checkpoints, even if it's optional to save at them.

I think in today's world of impatient gamers CD would not want to alienate anyone!!!
Perhaps a setting in the option menu can be the solution...

I really like the idea of a checkpoint when entering the hub and after that we are on our own....

You want hard core 'save'gaming? You can only save at the base camps. When you do missions, you can't save.

Hardcore mode. If you die, your save file is erased and you have to start over again from the beginning of the game.
