Default ...and pitbulls kill again.

Quote:
An 8-month-old infant boy was mauled and killed by at least one dog Thursday evening in a San Diego suburb, according to the county Sheriff's Department.

Up to three dogs may have been involved in the attack, which happened just before 5 p.m. on the 3000 block of West Street in Lemon Grove, east of downtown San Diego, NBCSanDiego.com reported.

The circumstances of the attack were unclear, but deputies arrived within four minutes of getting the call, San Diego sheriff's homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The child was pronounced dead at Rady's Children Hospital, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Authorities confirmed that three pit bulls were hauled away from the scene by Animal Control officers, NBCSanDiego.com reported.

"They were aggressive," Nesbit told NBCSanDiego.com. "They were restrained by animal control officers with the tools they have."

It's not clear if the boy's family owned the dogs or if the attack happened at their home.

"I can’t even imagine losing a child and to know that a family pet did it," next-door neighbor Regina Marlow told NBCSanDiego.com. "That’s horrific. I can’t even imagine what the family would be going through."

Neighbor Deirdra Canty said the dogs had been known to attack cats before.

"I don’t think that a dog like a pit bull, rottweiler, large dogs should be around little infants," Canty said.

It's hard to defend their breed when news like this keeps happening.

To me, it's not the propensity of one breed being more volatile than another. It's the fact that the damage done by a pit bull verses another type dog is usually much much more severe. While Dobermans and German Shepherds (for example) can potentially be dangerous, I've not heard of one mauling an 8 month old to death. Seems there are Pit Bull mauling stories once every month or two.

IMO, Pit Bulls don't always make the best pets. I know they have their supporters, and I know many have loving dispositions, but to me the potential isn't worth the risk.

If I was a mother I wouldn't let my kid be around any pet that could potentially kill my baby. I do not understand how some people still deny the danger.

I am scared of dogs in general, and this does not change my opinion one bit. But since I am scared, I can not comment objectively on this.

Subjectively, this is more evidence why we should kill all dogs, Starting with pitbulls.

^ Kill dogs? That's a bit extreme. I wouldn't even blame the breed, if you raise it properly in a healthy environment things like that don't happen. These dogs might have been raised aggressively, weren't fed, or even worse - were abandoned stray dogs.

Exactly.
It's ridiculously unresponsible to let children around big dogs, or any dog, for that matter. They can be docile and behave well, but it's still an animal that will react instantly to anything that even suggests any harm. And children don't know that.
