Lara is much more fluidly animated than in the previous games, and I do like a few of the changes in her controls, namely the fact that you can press control and forward to have Lara safety drop off a ledge instead of the awkward pivot.
Unfortunately, the controls were designed around Lara's animations and not vice versa. You may get used to them, but you'll never stop wishing they were better. I prefer to think of the game's progress as a 35-year-old Lara Croft (yes, Core's Lara aged) who is out of practice and slowly remembering her old moves. Not only is she out of practice, she was apparently temporarily disabled during her entombment at the end of TR4, and this missing plot point was excised from the game. But the biggest source of grief in playing AOD will not come from the controls, but from the awful game-stopping bugs. You can avert them most of the time by downloading either the 4.9 or the 5.2 patch here: http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/tng/updates.html

I remember it giving me fits. I remember anytime there was a lot going on (that included running across a rooftop in the rain), I would suddenly be playing with "Baywatch Lara" who did everything in slow motion. I remember having to give any ladder I had no plans on climbing a very wide berth because if I came too close, Lara would grab it. I remember lining up any precise jump was trial and error. Then time passed and, like childbirth, bad memory faded. Legend sucked, and nostalgia set in. I wondered if maybe it wasn't that bad. I thought maybe 3D controls were new to me when the game came out. I'd played a lot of analog games since then. Maybe it was just the learning curve for using the analog in a TR game. Maybe now, it wouldn't be so tortuous . . . I never made it out of the alley. The controls are just horrid. I'm still waiting for an explanation of why Core decided to move the jump button from where it had been for five effing games.

Truly and honestly, most reviews give the game a lot more flack than it really deserves.
![]() As it happens, my game (PC version, bought on the EU release day in 2003) is perfectly functional without any of the patches. The few bugs (more like engine-related oddities) I've encountered never stopped me from playing the game. ![]() Getting used to controlling Lara is a little tedious at first, but once you get into the game, it's not harder than TR1-TR5.

In my opinion, AOD was the easiest of Core's Tomb Raiders. Dealing with enemies was a cakewalk, there isn't any deathly traps that come out of nowhere like in previous games and etc. The only problem I had was timing jumps for some of the puzzles. Not dealing with the controls is just pure excuses. People wouldn't take the time to get used to it and gave up instead of working ways around it. If you get past the controls and how utterly unfinished the game was, it was a really great game. Definitely won't be forgotten.

I am now talking about the PC version, i never played it on Playstation 2. In the older titles, you could turn Lara precisely in any direction, here, she moves so fast that it is nearly impossible to orient her exactly into a specific direction. If you press the move button it takes a while until the function gets activated. So it can happen that if you want to do a sidestep, she actually turns arround. If you want to run there is a 50% chance that she will first walk two steps before she starts running. Walking on stairs looks hilarious and your controls become very limited. You can not roll for example. Doing an action and draw your guns is not possible... this is for example if you are walking/running or doing a roll. You have to stay still to pull them out. There are many obstacles where you get caught if you pass them in a little bit off angle. Sometimes if you press jump she appends a second jump in a row even if you let go off the jump button before she reaches the ground. I really like the control scheme of the classic Tomb Raider games for its precision and i also never had any issues with the direct controls of the Crystal Dynamic ones but Angel of Darkness is just plain horrible. I was stressed with it from the start to the end. It's as if Lara suddenly became 80 years old. Ah and don't listen to the people claiming Angel of Darkness for a good story. It is as hilarious and unlogical as any other Tomb Raider installment. If you want a good story, play Uncharted (if you want good gameplay don't play Uncharted ).My recomendation would be to play the old games or if you already did so, install the level editor and play lots of good homebrewed adventures. There's no "UN-playable" games. Anyone who has fingers, eyes, patience and brain can finish any game sooner or later. I never gave a **** about reviews. Has any review ever been written by a hardcore TR fan?

IGN is a stupid company that doesn't know how to review games at all. They probably never even beat the game. Back when I was eleven, I single-handedly beat this game by myself. Now, three years later, I'm close to beating this game again. Does that make it unplayable, IGN?
