Angry Computer disk drive acting as if there's nothing there

This problem just came up out of nowhere. I'm attempting to reinstall the Thief games to play some fan missions. I insert the disk into the drive, close it, hear the computer attempt to load up the disk, and yet nothing

I've tried playing other games I have, and it's the same result as before. It just remains as 'DVD RW Drive' and not the title of the game disk. Anyone know what the problem could be? As I'm currently at a loss

Does the disk work in another computer?

Well, I tried it out on my brother's computer(which can't really play games at all), but it at least realizes that there is actually a disk in the drive.

He took the computer apart, trying to figure out the problem, and it most likely seems to be something with the wiring or possibly the laser that actually reads the disks has died, as he tried my computer's disk drive on his own computer(and it worked perfectly fine on his).

So, it looks like I won't be able to play PC games for a long time, until this is fixed

Replacement optical drives are really cheap - You can get a DVD Multi Burner for less than $20. If it's low profile it might be a little more, but still, not a calamity. I'd also try a different disk in the same computer, because if the drive is dead it shouldn't be able to read anything.
