I've been replaying TR2 since I downloaded it from the app store. I'm stuck on the Wreck of the Maria Doria, this is a lot harder than I remember

AOD was hard, but that was mostly due to the horrible controls and bugs, so that's something I would classify almost as fake difficulty. I've only ever played through TR3 once, and I found it to be excruciating most of the time. The puzzles were hard, the backtracking was difficult, and the battles were hard. I would generally classify as the hardest of the TR games. I especially hated the final boss. I was never able to access the secret level, nor did I feel compelled to afterwards. TR4 is hard mostly due to puzzles and backtracking, and is sometimes boring if you don't know what to do next. TR5 fills me with too much apathy to replay to a great extent. I uncovered all of the secrets except for one. The difficulty of TR1 and TR2 feels about right to me. I've only ever played the Legend demo, but I hated the controls more than those in AOD. I also have TRA, but I've only made it up to the boss battle in the Tomb of Tihocan and was never able to progress further, mostly because I found the controls nearly impossible to use on my laptop. What really throws me off is having to utilize the camera seperately from Lara's movements. These games were certainly not made with the PC in mind.

The fact that it makes Tomb Raider look like a run and gunner, and doesn't require any thought process into the puzzles, traps, enemies, obstacles, jumps (all automatic) Just takes the whole feel of what Tomb Raider was. This is all my opinion of course, but I grew up on the classics, so I'm sure you can see where I'm coming from.

TR3 is the most difficult on the PS due to the limited saves. TR1 and 3 save system on the PS were terrible. The traps were pretty hard in TR3. At least for 4 you get unlimited saves regardless of the platform you play it on. The only TR games on the PSX that had good save systems were TR2, TR4, TR5, and TR6.
