microsoft gamepad

Im having the weridest problem.
I own a microsoft gamepad, when i load TRC to play everything works fine. When a level starts i press a single button on the game pad and all of a sudden she starts running around in circles like a chicken with her head cut off. When this hapens i can no longer use the up key on my kboard or gamepad but all of the other buttons work.
The only way of stoping it is quiting to the menu screen
im running it on win 2000 any sugestions??
