Troubles after using health patch with flight patch in TRLR

Both patches work fine, but I fooled around with the health patch setup a little, and FMVs, cut scenes, and the game itself were way too dark.
My fooling around with it must have done something to the video drivers or DirectDraw I thought.
I continued, and found I couldn't go out of that room.
It was difficult seeing where I was going, but when I finally got to the ladder and climbed up (I swam up), I could not jump across because an invisible wall was in the way.

I uninstalled the program, checked for errors on the drive, and defragged.
I then reinstalled it and added the official fix, and it all happened again.
What is happening, and how can I fix it?
