Stuck so early

Hi.

It is a bit difficult to explain where I am in the game but what I can tell you is that it is very early in the game. I find myself at a shallow pool of water which I can wade through waist deep. When I walk around the surounding area I found two ropes. One I pulled which turned the water into Lava. I then seem to get stuck in the area above the Lava and also have acces to a couple of passages. Any idea on what to do next?
