Given the success of TRL, plus recent trends in the gaming industry where 1st person shooters pretty much have taken over the gaming scene for the past decade, I think the 3rd person shooter aspect of TRL would be further capitalized to compete in this contemporary setting. Maybe we'd still be seeing puzzles to retain TR's intellectual integrity but I think the evolution of TR's action features will be in full throttle.
If this would be the case, what new features do you think would look good in them? Last edited by Cypocalypse; 20-06-06 at 17:41. |

I don't know, legend did feel more like a shooter than an adventure game, let alone an exploring game. There wasn't any exploring except what was directly on her path...
And what would you call those bike levels but a shooter?

Good gods, I hope not.
The fact that TR isn't 'just another shooter' is what has maintained my interest. My interest in shooting stuff is pretty low, actually... I view enemies as part of the wider puzzle; as something to overcome to get closer to my goal. A lot of my favourite TR levels actually had the least emenies in them. Keeping the enemy encounter factor low also increases their impact - the fact that their weren'r enemies behind every door and around every corner actually cranked the suspense up because you simply didn't know where they were coming from. It has been theorised that one of the reasons TR is so popular with female gamers isn't that it has a female protagonist, but actually the fine balance between action, exploration and the cerebral. As a woman, I can tell you that I personally fit that theory pretty tightly - the odd enemy is fine for realism / atmosphere, but it is the combination of the three things above that attracts me. So, if TR went solely 3d action shooter, I'd bail. Simple as that.

I misunderstood--didn't read clearly! I thought the topic creator was asking if it would become a 1st person shooter!
Still, I don't see it becoming a 3rd person shooter either... Legend had more adventure in it (although still not nearly enough), and I think the message has been received loud and clear about us wanting much more exploration and puzzles in TR8. So I don't see it going more action-oriented; I see it going back away from that.

I don't want this to happen either. I know from experience that I am not good at all at shooter games. Tomb Raider always combined a lot of interesting different aspects from different games in one game. I do not want to loose this.

To further answer the Cypocalypse... although I think action should be a small percentage of any Tomb Raider game, when it does occur I think it should be improved. They improved it in Legend with new moves and such but the problem was you hardly had to do any of that stuff! Enemies died too fast as it was. I think enemies should be tougher, shots (both yours and theirs) should have a very good chance of missing when you are moving, cover should be necessary when firing from a stationary position, AI needs to be ramped up considerably, etc. Combat moments should be far apart but when they do occur they should be intense! Those moments should really challenge you as a gamer, rather than be just run and shoot until enemy dies, repeat...

I think Tomb Raider is best how it was on TR1, 2 and 3.
