Arrow **Tomb Raider Anniversary FAQ **spoiler**

To the Fans, From the Fans.

This has been a little Work-in-Progress for a while, it's not fully completed but it's getting there. I asked a few fans, all for different reasons, to write a small essay on ten years of Tomb Raider - how it changed them, how it affected them and what it meant to them. And here they are for you to read and enjoy .

Essay Index, Rivendell's Essay, Pipolinne's Essay, Samsdad's Essay, MickiZ88's Essay, Jin Uzuki's Article.

There's still more to come and hopefully some more of you would like to include something for the other fans . Note: This will be moved towards the bottom of the FAQ so the main game information comes first. It is situated at the top for now because a lot of work has gone into these essays.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary - What is it?

Inspired by the first Tomb Raider video-game, originally released in 1996, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a totally new 2006 adventure for Lara, faithfully preserving the elements which made the original Tomb Raider such a classic.

Using an enhanced Tomb Raider Legend game engine, the graphics, technology, physics and engine bring Lara Croft's adventure and pursuit of a mystical artefact known only as the Scion right up to today's technology standards and will offer gamers a completely new gameplay experience.

The game is a remake of Tomb Raider, although it's not a 1:1 remake. Some areas are new.

The storyline of Anniversary.

After "discovering" the city of Vilcabamba in the mountains of Peru, Jacqueline Natla hires Lara Croft to find the three pieces of the Atlantean Scion. Years earlier, Lord Richard Croft had tried to do the same and now Lara is finishing what he started.

What are the moves in Anniversary?

Lara has retained many of her moves from Legend such as the auto-grab (which can be turned on and off at your liking), lateral jumping and grappling moves. The newest additions to Lara's repertoire is that she will be able to balance on narrow poles and she will also be able to use the grapple to climb and descend walls (think 'absailing'). Along with absailing, she can use the grapple to run along walls. Also, when Lara falls from a height into water she will go into a "dive bomb" instead of just normally falling. If Lara is attacked by an enemy, quickly tapping the "jump" button will allow Lara to recover more quickly.

Lara will also be able to access her journal which will include updates of what has happened and tips for those who want them.

Old friends and foes made new again.

The environment (or the levels for less posh people) could be your friend or foe in the original. Crystal Dynamics have remade the levels by including new paths - a challenging and easy way for some levels - and classic puzzles like the Lost Valley's cog puzzle have been given a redesign for a much bigger grand and scale and is now more logical in design (the waterfall actually powers the cogs to turn by using Legend's physics engine). According to Crystal Dynamics, Anniversary will have the biggest areas ever in any Tomb Raider game.

Also, the other foes of the game, the ferocious animals, have been given a graphical face (and body) lift and the AI of the enemies has been vastly improved (both from Tomb Raider, obviously, and Tomb Raider: Legend).
Most of the enemies will appear in swarms or packs like the bats, wolves and 'raptors. Bats will take one shot each to kill but will usually appear in a large swarm and the 'raptors taking much much more bullets before they fall.

The enemies now have a rage meter which Lara can use against them. When the rage meter is filled for an enemy, a small sign will flash above their heads and they will charge at Lara. If they hit her they will deal more damage to her. If, however, Lara dodges the attack before they hit her, she will be given the chance for a more damaging attack, usually a head shot which will kill them instantly.

The game will feature the multiple difficulty modes found in Legend. The 'Tomb Raider' difficulty will remove all hints, the auto-grab feature and more precise jumps will be needed.

The Quick Time Events (interactive cutscenes) return for Anniversary.

The reticules (red targets) from Legend return.

Colour me classic.

The Legend model of Lara has been given a tweak in the facial department to make her look slightly more like the original Lara.

For fans of the original (and who isn't?) the ring inventory is back in action complete with updates of those classic sounds as you turn around looking for those Dual Uzis, Pistols, Magnums or the Shotgun as they return as the only weapons of Anniversary.

And just like in the original there will be no vehicles. Crystal Dynamics are also keen to try and include the isolation atmosphere from the original game which they have been placing a lot of emphasis on.

Fans of swimming will be pleased to know that the underwater section have gotten more complex since Legend.

Croft Manor from Tomb Raider: Legend will make an appearence in place of the Classic mansion, although it's said to contain many references to the older model.

The secrets are back again in the form of relics and smaller artefacts but this time the special chime from Tomb Raider will accompany the finding of one. And in addition to this, the original music has been redone and updated, with microscores for each type of enemey to give it that extra flavour.

All the locations from the original have been merged together to give more fluid gameplay. This way, the levels aren't separated by load screens - only the different locations are.

Rumours...

Lara's Mansion has a bigger purporse than just a training level.
Jumps will be bigger than they were in Tomb Raider: Legend.
Jaywalker is a robot who will explode on the release date of TR:A.

What platforms will it be coming out on?

Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, PC and was recently announced for the Nintendo Wii.
  • There has been no word or any intention that the game will appear on any other consoles, nor made 'Next Gen'.
  • The PSP version will have a revised control system, it is unknown whether the PC and PS2 version will also get a control overhaul.
  • The PS2 version of Anniversary is really pushing to the system to its limits in its last year.
  • The Wii version will make use of the Wii's unique motion sensor controllers: The Wiimote and Nunchuck.
It's been ten years, will there be any bonus material?

Yes, there will be. There will be a director's commentary included with the game.

There will also be unlockable outfits including 'Bacon' Lara, the catsuit from Tomb Raider 3 and Tomb Raider Chronicles and the Tomb Raider II SOLA wetsuit. The original polygon model of Lara will also be unlockable after completing the game.

The PSP version will also see the return of the Wi-fi multiplayer PSP exclusive modes like Raid 'n' Seek. The PSP version will also feature exlcusive costumes, music and wallpapers amongst other things.

What is the release date of the Tomb Raider: Anniversary?

The game is to be released June 1st 2007 for Europe, June 5th 2007 for the USA, June 7th for Australasia and June 8th for Poland.

What about the 'Special Edition'?

The Collector's Edition will include a restrospective documentary on Tomb Raider; all the trailers for Anniversary; Lara renders, posters and advertisements from throughout the years; a gallery containing artwork, screenshots and renders from Anniversary and a collection of music from Legend and Anniversary. The Collector's Edition (CE) has so far been confirmed for the the whole of Europe, New Zealand and Australia. Note: The CE may be exclusive to specific retailers depending on the country you live in and are of limited stock.

What characters will be in Tomb Raider: Anniversary?

Lara Croft - Lara Croft, the british aristocrat who rebelled against her upper class life to become an archaeologist-adventurer. Famous for finding artefacts such as "The Dagger of Xian", "The Hand of Rathmore", "The Philosopher's Stone" and "Excalibur", we, the players, return to her first adventure to find out, how ten years later, she is known as video gaming's leading lady.

Keeley Hawes returns as the voice of Ms. Lara Croft. She voiced Lara in Tomb Raider: Legend and has had guest spots in The Vicar of Dibley and starred in After Thomas.

Jacqueline Natla -The CEO of Natla Industries. She hires Lara Croft to search for three pieces of the artefact "The Scion". Natla, however, is not all she seems...

Official renders of Natla will be appearing sometime soon, keep your eyes open!

Natla will be voiced by Grey DeLisle who has experience in other video games such as Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, X-Men: The Official Game, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown and Scooby Doo! Unmasked.

Tihocan and Qualopec - Two of the three Atlantean rulers. They imprisoned the third Atlantean ruler and hold pieces of the Scion within their tombs.

Tihocan's voice will be provided by Steven Blum. His can be heard in: Just Cause, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Resistance: Fall of Man.

Qualopec's voice actor is Alistair Duncan who's voice credits include the previous Tomb Raider installment Tomb Raider: Legend and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.

Larson and Pierre DuPont are two of the five mercenaries that Natla has hired for personal reasons. They are also 'experienced' Tomb Raiders. When Natla wants something done, it is Larson and Pierre who she trusts most to get it done. Official renders of Larson and Pierre will be released sometime soon. Keep a lookout. You can find an unofficial, but real, render of Larson here: Larson Render.

Larson's voice will be provided by Dave Wittenberg. His voice credits include: Devil May Cry 3, Dead Rising and The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II. Pierre is being voiced by Jim Ward.

Winston, though he doesn't make his first appeareance until Tomb Raider II, will appear in the mansion as usual.

He is voiced by Alan Shearman who has worked on films such as Happy Feet and John Tucker Must Die.

Zip and Alister - Lara's assistants from Tomb Raider: Legend - have been done away for Anniversary but will be back for the next-generation Tomb Raider 8.

Additional characters are KOLD voiced by Dave Fennoy, an unknown character believed to be another Atlantean ruler or the name of Natla's Cowboy mercenary, KID voiced by Phil Tanzini who rides his Skateboard in Natla's Mines and Lara's Peruvian Guide voiced by Dave Beron.

Who is the model for Anniversary?

Karima Adebibe returns as the model for Anniversary. However, she is not the only model to return to celebrate the ten years of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft.

You can find a photoshoot of 5 of the models (Jill De Jong, Nell McAndrew, Lara Weller, Lucy Clark and Karima Adebibe) here: Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary Lara Croft Model Photoshoot.

How much of the game is completed?

The game has went "Gold" and is being mass produced. Yup, it's coming soon!

Any possibility of a Tomb Raider II remake?

The question has been raised by the Crystal Dynamics team. While they are not working on it, there is a possibility that Tomb Raider II may get remade.

What's this about a leaked trailer?

The trailer - embargoed by Eidos - was the remake trailer of Tomb Raider by previous Tomb Raider developers Core Design. Core were originally intended to remake TR1 on PSP, PS2 and PC but their version was cancelled (reasons unknown). The Core trailer found its way onto the internet, most likely by train, was discovered and put up to debate by fans as to whether it was real or fake. As you probably know from reading this paragraph, it was real.

Eidos found out and they embargoed it and later released a press release stating that an Anniversary Edition was being made but it was being developed by Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend developers Crystal Dynamics.

Dizzone. The original layout was always weird looking, then you posted and I saw why. I hadn't centred it and it wasn't colourful. So, thanks
