The problem actually is that built-in VIA Rhine II Ethernet Adapter can't detect the cable is connected and reports "No cable" on both PC's with this adapters.

The way we solved this problem whenever it happened in our school (of twelve computers, three or four had their internal ethernet dying) was to buy a PCI ethernet card and use that instead. Those things are quite cheap right now. Of course, there is probably a better solution.

Have you checked that the actual cable is a crossover type, which is required if only connecting two computers.

Many modern computers can be connected without crossover cables. Did using a crossover cable solve the problem?
