Arrow Rebuilding A Classic, Article translated to English

I've translated as good as I can from this article (VG Nett, A Norwegian news paper)
I started a new thread so more people could read it. Enjoy!

REBUILDING A CLASSIC

Are you ready for a real adventure?
Next year Lara is back in the original version of the “Tomb Raider” game.

TOUGH ADVENTURER: This is Lara Craft the way she should be, tough and alone ready to explore old mysteries.
This is a “scene” from “Tomb Raider: Anniversary.” Photo: Crystal Dynamics/Eidos.

“Tomb Raider: Anniversary” is not going to be an exact copy of the 10 year old classic.
In stead the game is exposed with new and bigger areas (levels) and with the Legend control-system.

-We look at this the same way as Peter Jackson did when he did a new version of “King Kong”.
We take all the elements that people remember (and double them) and then make the levels between these as amazing as we can.

-When we first decided to make an “Anniversary Edition” we had a lot of Ideas for the game and how we should do it.
We were thinking about looking back, but from a new different angle,
or let the today’s Lara Croft travel back to the same areas as in Tomb Raider 1.

NOW AND THEN: This is how the original from 1996 of “Tomb Raider” looked like.
When the original game is made again, it will look a lot better.
The control system is modified and the gamers will get new levels to explore. Photo: Crystal Dynamics/Eidos.

In the end we found out that “Tomb Raider 1” fits very well with “Tomb Raider Legend” who in many ways grew out of the original.
We could make the same game without changing the story.
All we really needed to do was put more history into it.
“More history to the same game”

Tomb Raider: Anniversary is treaded like it’s the next game in the series, but not as a step back.
Future Tomb Raider games are going to be more like this, than Tomb Raider Legend.

-Exploring is what “Tomb Raider” games are about. And this is the way it should be.
“Tomb Raider: Legend” was too linear and easy, and this is what we are changing in the Anniversary Edition.

It looks like the direction the series were heading with “Angel of Darkness” is dead and buried.
Tody Gard is absolutely sure what went wrong with the last game Core design made.
- “Angel of Darkness” really fell so hard of track that it's almost impossible.
“Tomb Raider” is about old mysteries and the locations that Lara Croft travels to.
And the environments are just as important as Lara Croft is!
A hide and sneak game, just isn’t Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary will be released on PS2, PC and PSP in 2007.

THEY GET IT!!! THEY GET IT!!! THEY HEARD OUR CRIES OF DISPAIR!!!

This is sounding VERY promising!!! The Legend control scheme is good, it just has to be applied properly!!!

l knew they wanted to return to Atlantis since it is so important to the Legend storyline, and l knew they wanted the remake to be done before Tomb Raider 8, because there was something we needed to see in the remake, l was always suspicious Legend was somehow before Tomb Raider one, it will be interesting to see if they do it as a previous adventure or directly after legend. If directly after what happened to Zip and Alister, did she finally get sick of their annoying ways and fire them?

True they could fit the visit to Atlantis in as part of the Legend storyline, give us more history on Atlantis and her leaders and people, the politics of the nation and all the dirty laundry so to speak, why was Natla so determined that at least some Atlanteans needed to survive no matter what form they took. But how are they going to connect the scion to the other Atlantean artifacts (dais's, swords, stones etc) The scion had a completely different purpose, and although another Atlantean artifact of great power, hardly ties in with what Lara is meant to be looking for in the Legend storyline. Unless it was just a ploy to learn more about Natla and Atlantis

Certainly l am thrilled they would rather make games more like the classics, now if only they would publish a complete chronological listing of Lara's adventures l would be satisfied. Or at least tell us exactly when the anniversary game takes place in relation to Legend and perhaps Tomb Raider II.

Actually the direction AOD was heading is suspiciously similiar to the direction Legend Lara seems to be heading, they were just starting from a different angle, with a more darker story, but still looked like they were going to take it back to the ancient gods/immortals, Atlantis and Lara's part in the greater scheme of things. l think if we had a chance to see the rest of the AOD story it would be much more like a classic tomb raider game. Certainly you cannot get much older than the mystery of the fallen Angels and their role in mans early advancements in not only the sciences but many other areas, and the tombs of the Cappadocia area of Turkey were as ancient if not older than anything else in the Tomb Raider games, positively prehistoric you could say. l still hold out hope they will return to the story in some form, someday

Sounds like the same news we heard from 2 other magazines now, must be a press release eidos is feeding to all the magazines. Still, some good points brought up about expanding exploring, lengthening the game and making it less linear. And future games will be more like the AE than legend! Let's hope these aren't just words we wanna hear, but they actually get it and AE is awesome so we can expect more great games from CD!

Now anyone saying I'm being negative I'm gonna hit you over the head with a big stick!

yay! great news!! i'm happy that tey realise the last installment was linear and easy the 'new levels' sound great as well!

the AOD bashing was a bit unnecessary, for the rest, great article, good news!

thanks for translating, legends.
