Clijsters battles to Sydney title
Kim Clijsters took her first WTA title of 2007 with a 4-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 win over Jelena Jankovic in the final of the Sydney International on Friday.
Jankovic looked set to win her second event of the year, following victory in Auckland last week, when she twice served for the match in the second set. But the 21-year-old Serb missed a match point as she failed to close out. And Clijsters took advantage, storming through the tie-break before seeing off a Jankovic rally in the deciding set. It was a second impressive week for the Belgian, who beat Maria Sharapova to win the Champions Challenge exhibition event in Hong Kong last Saturday. "It's been an incredible night for me, that was great," said Clijsters. "Jelena's improved so much and I think she's a great player and has a great future ahead of her." And talking of the match point she faced, Clijsters added: "That's tennis, it's never over. "I was down match point, so it's easy to think it's over but you should never think like that. "You should always try to find a way to make the next point better. "Even if you make a mistake, don't think about it any more, just refocus and forget about it and just start all over." Jankovic said: "I felt like I was the better player. I had it, I should have won it in two sets. In two points I made mistakes. "I would feel better if she really beat me - if she was dominating and she beat me 6-2 6-2, OK, then she was a better player. "But when I lose like this, when I had everything, it hurts to lose more. But, anyway, it shows I can compete with the best. "I've shown I can beat the best players in the world and hopefully I'll join them soon." SOURCE. Anyone watched the final match? Few years ago Serbia didn't even a representative, now we have one of the best |
