While I don't hate them, I always love the stage version better, way better. I can barely appreciate any movies if I had seen the musical in advance. The magic of stage acting and the wonders of stage singing are lost in movies, making them sometimes painful to watch.

Saying that however if it's original, like many disney movies, then I absolutely love them. One thing I love about disney is that they hire broadway actors to do the in-film singing, which IMO is always much better than the version they have in the end with pop singer.

I prefer stage musicals, but sometimes the movie versions turn out to be fine as well. I'm a big Phantom of the Opera fan (Phan) and enjoyed the movie thoroughly, even if Gerard Butler is better off running around shirtless as opposed to "singing".

I like them, the good ones I mean, not just any musicals, say HSM.

The sound of music will always be a great classic. I grew up watching it.
Sweeney Todd is another amazing masterpiece, not just for the musicals but also for the excellent dark direction I liked.
Across the Universe is also great because it was based on Beatles songs (which are hands down classic awesomeness)

*winces at mentions of Sweeny Todd* That was such a horrible adaptation. It's such a magnificent musical and the movie is sooooo baaad!

My favorites are:

My Fair Lady. Some of the most brilliant lyrics of all time. Rex and Audrey. The horse race is still brilliant.

GiGi. A young Louis Jordan *drools*. Really brings out the romantic in me.

West Side Story.

Chicago

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory I adore Gene Wilder

The Producers

Just saw Phantom again. It's a magical film, but sometimes too overblown and self-indulgent in its atmosphere. While I'm not too keen on Gerard Butler as the Phantom, I love love looove Emmy Rossum! *faints*

Let's not forget Evita, starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. While it amounted to not much more than a caricature of Eva Peron, it was a beautiful and atmospheric period piece, at times hilarious and at others heartbreaking.
