Greetings folks. Most of you will be aware we suffered severe network failure yesterday that resulted in our primary web server being off-line for approx. 24 hours. This time, the outage was unavoidable and as usual we are looking into contingency measures to prevent a similar occurrence. Normal service resumed at 09:30 GMT this morning. Total off-line time was 23.5hr. There are intermittent DNS/name server blackouts occurring with a number of British ISPs this evening (including NTL who I connect via) and some may experience continued connection problems. These are nominal and should run their course sometime this evening.

Know that our servers are constantly monitored by a U.S. based network uptime reporting company who automatically test the integrity of the network and connection to a handful of domains on our server continuously every 15 minutes. When an error is detected, an automated alert is sent to both Andrew and myself via cell, email and sms. One of us is normally aware of an incident from the start, and will immediately set to work trying to resolve the problem. Because our servers are now located in Telehouse London and not on our own property, access sometimes takes time. For this we apologise.

Maintaining 100% uptime is close to impossible. No ISP can truthfully claim their network never suffers outages, because sometimes it's the hops in between browser and server than inadvertently make a web site seem off-line. All we can do is try to remain up to the best of our ability barring any external technical problems. I know I rattle off all too frequently the cost of running and maintaining two very busy and intensive web sites, but note that unlike some gaming mags that receive funding from their parent (company) or sponsors, we have to negotiate our financial burden on our own. Each reboot costs money. Sometimes, for the benefit of long-term survival, we have to tackle problems ourselves (even driving to London to manually reboot) in order to reduce outlay.

Again, some DNS resolving is still intermittent, but this should clear up during the nocturnal hours of Wed morning GMT.
