Yeah, I guess that's one of looking at it. Quite frankly I do not see them porting it to PC because it's not profitable. Now.. If they decided to remaster L-A-U, that's a different story, because they could do something like Mass Effect did, and re-release all three games on current gen consoles.

my guess is, unless this is crowdfunded or they have fans volunteer free time it's never going to come out for PC.

Capcom did the same for Resident Evil 5.
The DLCs/Gold Edition content was only released on PC 6 years later, and obviously the Gold Edition was more expensive or you could buy the DLC upgrade, so it isn't like they lost money.
It was actually a nice excuse to hike the price of an old game and cool for the fans and game preservation.
It wasn't a new port, on a new engine, with new graphics or anything, it is literally just the DLCs ported to the same old PC port and they removed GFWL to add Steamworks, very simple upgrade, but great for game preservation.
They didn't do it for money, neither lost any i think. It was actually quite effective to promote a ''new PC version of Resident Evil 5, the Gold Edition'', higher price, few more sales than the usual, but it was all old content, and not even a remaster.

If SE don't do it, it's because they really don't want to, not because it will be expensive or hard to port, it's not at all. It won't sell much, but will be enough to move a few extra sales and to pay for the job for sure.

that's a 6 year difference though, 2009 -> 2015. this is potentially a 14 year difference, 2008 -> 2022. and it's not one of square enix's flagship IPs, unlike capcom which are basically all RE, street fighter, and monster hunter.

if this was a final fantasy or dragon quest i'd say maybe it stands a chance but it's just tomb raider, the project-funding-series.

Now that Tomb Raider sold as much as Dragon Quest and currently the second most profitable franchise of Square Enix, if they still don't consider it as a flagship IP this is really desparate...

Square has never really cared for Tomb Raider in the same way that they have their own longstanding franchises. They care that it makes them money, that's why the merge with Eidos happened years ago. But on the whole, it's still a western game series that they inherited from Eidos, and they'll keep it around as long as it makes them money.

Bingo. I've long referred to Tomb Raider and Lara as Square's "step-child". They like that they can churn a profit out of it, but it's very clear their passion is not with the franchise.
