Tomb Raider Legend: Upgraded

Hello Everybody!

I'm making this thread as a continuation of ATombRaiderFan's Fixing Lara's Outfits (Old Gen) project because they are taking break from modding. They very generously gave me the all the necessary files so that I can continue building on the fixes that they and MachoBroccoli have already made for the game. Thank you ATombRaiderFan :)

The Project

I've already created a thread showcasing my upgraded loading screens and skyboxes mods so the main purpose of this thread will be to showcase my new Legend Upgraded mod for the "old gen" version of the game. This is a mod that will stay as vanilla friendly as possible, it will just give the game a slight boost in visuals.

I'm doing this by taking higher quality textures from the next gen version and replacing any low quality textures I can find in the old gen version. I'm also combining some of the textures with the bump mapping and reflection mapping of the next gen textures to manually recreate some of the next gen lighting effects in old gen. A couple of the next gen textures aren't a perfect match to their old gen versions but I'm still using them because I am sure most of the old gen textures are supposed to look like the next gen textures, they just had to be simplified and lowered in quality for the game to work on less powerful technology at the time.

Some Comparisons

One of the textures that isn't the same is the PDA texture. I changed this because it's used in one of the very first cutscenes and if you look closely at the original you will see some silly immersion breaking things, such as, every level location in the game being listed. Lara shouldn't know where she's travelling to next at that point in the game lol. Sadly we still can't get a reliable fix for the weird border glitch.

Hopefully there is interest in this! I will be going through level by level and releasing updates in stages so I can get any feedback you may have. Bolivia, Bolivia Redux (which use the same textures) and Peru are available to download now. OldGen+ will continue to be updated with any new fixes that I find going through the game.

Alternate Outfits

I'm also including the Alternate Outfits mod created by ATombRaiderFan. This is a mod that replaces 10 outfits from the game: 8 outfits exclusive to the PSP version of Legend (thank you to TheTreeble who extracted most of those textures) and the golden dragon variants of the Evening Dress and Evening Ripped outfits. I've updated this mod with higher quality versions of some of the outfits that I recreated from scratch. It will be linked below (Some comparisons here)

ADVICE:

The LAU games work best when played at a frame rate of 85FPS or below (special thank you to Wooxman for discovering this). When played above that frame rate, the game starts to glitch and strange game bugs are likely to happen. If you have a computer monitor with a refresh rate of below 85Hz then you can enable V-Sync but if your refresh rate is above 85Hz, do not enable V-Sync. You should instead go into your GPU control panel (NVIDIA control panel for example), then into your Legend .exe settings and limit your maximum FPS to 85 or lower.

Fullscreen Anti-Aliasing in the in-game settings should be disabled because shadows are broken with it enabled. Anti-Aliasing can be enabled externally through your GPU control panel again. If that doesn't work, you can download a post-processing software called ReShade for your game (which comes with lots of other useful features) and enable anti-aliasing through that.

I recommend using all the mods together for the ultimate experience but when using large tpf files in TexMod, the game will be slow to start up. There is absolutely no slow down once the game is running, it just takes a while for the game to load all the texture replacements. If you do use them together, place the OldGen+ tpf at the bottom of your list. There are different versions of the mods to choose from. Skyboxes Upgraded uses the next gen version of the first Bolivia skybox. Skyboxes Upgraded (Alternate) uses the old gen version. The 2 versions of the OldGen+ mod are for Nishimura. One keeps his original shades with the incorrect reflections, the other changes them to transparent glasses.

Here is a link to Tomb Raider Hub which contains a TexMod download and useful tutorial.

OldGen+ Version 2.15

The first new update from me to OldGen+ is available now. I've made some minor fixes to a few outfits, including fixes for outfits where Lara's belt was clipping through her grapple. I've found higher quality textures for her pistols and grenades and I've also added a major fix to the Jeep seen throughout the game and fixed the issue with the skybox in Bolivia covering some of the rocks in the background.

This is fantastic news! I'll update my video description with a link to this thread so it's easier for people to find all these fixes

Keep it up!

(EDIT) Hopefully would like to see these mods useable without Texmod someday as I like to repack the BIGFILES to make fixes more permanent

Hey, thank you for the support I appreciate it. Great to hear from you again!

I also want the mods to be usable without TexMod. I want them to feel more permanent too but Iím still new to a lot of this so unfortunately things arenít always perfect haha. Iím organising getting DRMs for all the new things added :tmb:

Next-Gen doesn't crash on the GOG version. Is it possible that the team can upgrade that version?

Hi there, all of these mods are focused on the old gen version because personally I've never really liked the look of the next gen version and I know the others working on this feel similarly. Some of the textures are the same in both versions so they will be automatically fixed in next gen too. I might make some fixes for next gen one day but currently I'm not interested in doing that, sorry.

ATombRaiderFan 30-09-21 06:23

Congratulations on starting up your new thread. I do especially like the improvements you've made for the pda and the jeep, and seeing the car number plate uncovered feels like a archeological discovery in itself.

Keep up the great work Ameliorator! :tmb:

Hey, thank you and nice to see you here again :)

I’m happy to hear you like the fixes and I agree, the Jeep number plate was a brilliant find. It was just lying underneath the texture this whole time I couldn’t believe it

Thank you and yeah, I understand a few people aren’t interested in using TexMod so I’m working on getting the DRMs up to date for this

Wow! How cool! Will you also be replacing some of Lara's textures? I hate her old gen hair texture.

m.art.in 02-10-21 23:20

Wow that's really cool!
I'd really like to see the next gen version fixed one day!
Either official, or fan-made.. I've played with a thought that I'd replace level textures with ones from TRU or SOTTR..
But honestly it's too much work I got no time for :D and with the current state of the next gen version (see-through textures, chrashes etc.) it's not really worth it..

What's also cool is to use some Reshade magic. Ambient Occlusion makes wonders in this game (even tho the depth channel is kinda broken) and hides a lot of 'not-so-nice' stuff.. I have to try it with this mod, I assume it will look insane!

Hi there, thank you :) I did consider making changes to Lara's textures but almost all her textures that needed fixed have been fixed by ATombRaiderFan and unfortunately, Lara's hair texture in next gen is actually lower quality than old gen! The reason her hair looks better in next gen is because it's layered with multiple different textures that only work in that version. Sorry about that

Hello and thank you so much! It is definitely a lot of work replacing textures haha. I agree that it would be great to see the next gen version fixed one day. It's a shame that it's so glitchy on the PC, we still can't do a lot to fix those problems sadly.

And yes ReShade is amazing. I use a bunch of features from it when playing through my games to make them look even better :tmb:

Additional Outfits Version 1.35

The masterpost now includes the Additional Outfits mod which I have updated with new, higher quality textures for some of the low quality outfits.

As an example, here's the before and after of Winter, Brown Sleeves which replaces Winter, Orange:

Thank you JAMJOOM, I've also loved seeing all the modding you've been doing for Underworld :)

Just an update on everything - I've been really busy recently so I haven't had much time to work on anything but I’m still making progress. I'm almost ready to release the Peru upgrades for my Legend Upgraded mod. I've also found more fixes to add to the OldGen+ mod which I'll share as well.

In the meantime, I want to share an interesting little discovery I've made. A few weeks ago I found a thread on the forums from over a decade ago where people had discovered that Legend and Anniversary had a value in their game registries called "EAXSupport". Here's a screenshot of it:

https://i.imgur.com/OMEC336.jpg

This suggested that these games should be able to use EAX sound technology but when the value was activated, nothing happened in game. Thanks to some help from the user Jathom95 and their EAX restoration mod pack for Angel of Darkness, I was able to actually reactivate EAX in Legend / Anniversary using the same techniques that restore it in AoD!

Sadly though, there's not much to celebrate about because it doesn't activate any surround sound or other special EAX technology in the games. It does make the panning between the left and right audio channels smoother but that's the only positive change. In the end I don't think it's worth your time restoring EAX in Legend / Anniversary but I still wanted to share this with you all because it's an nice little discovery. Someone might even be able to do something further with this information in the future.

New Update:

The next update is here!

Here are the fixed and upgraded textures for Peru. I've done my absolute best to take screenshots that do a good job of showing off the changes. The problem though is that it's really difficult to see all the new detailed textures in a compressed jpg image over the internet. It's much easier to see everything that's been changed when actually playing in-game. Almost every texture has received an upgrade. This includes lots of smaller textures like posters, the water surfaces, cobwebs, wooden planks and more but these smaller changes are impossible to pick up on in a screenshot so I couldn't get images of every single change. Here are some notable ones:

I've also updated my skyboxes and loading screens upgraded mods because there were a few changes I made to make some of them look even cleaner. All these new files will be linked on the masterpost. I'm also planning on adding a couple of new fixes I've found to the OldGen+ mod but I'm experiencing a weird glitch with some of the textures right now so I can't update it yet.

Regarding the DRM files: I am making progress with them but unfortunately it will take a while as I still don't have a lot of free time to work on this at the moment. It's such a long and complicated process to unpack the game's files and repack them with new textures. Thankfully Japan is a very short level so I will have the upgrades for that completed much quicker :)

Im posting here to inform Ameliorator that he's updated version 2.15 of oldgen + isn't working for me. I have no issues whit v 2.14.
Also i'd like to know where to download upgraded loading screens and skyboxes mods. The apposit thread has no links.... neither this one.

Hi Kenshir0, I'm sorry about the confusion. I checked my links and it turns out I've had the old, broken versions of the mods linked instead of the newest versions. I have no idea how I messed that up but thank you for pointing this out to me. Everything should be working fine now :)

Ameliorator 05-11-21 15:37

OldGen+ Version 2.17

Here's a new update for the OldGen+ mod. I noticed some of Lara's outfits had fingers that were missing fingernails and all of her belt buckles were actually lined up incorrectly so I've fixed those issues. I also discovered that in next-gen, some of Lara's outfits have really cool, unique belt buckles that match the themes of the outfits. In old-gen however, she has the same belt buckle for almost every outfit so I thought it would be better to use these unique belt buckles in old-gen.

Other random fixes that I've made include correcting the shading on her snowsuit outfit, swapping the incorrect plain white shirt on the goth outfit with the correct lace version, using even more higher quality textures that were found in the next-gen version (the 2 tapestries in Croft Manor are real tapestries, so I was able to make HQ versions of them from images online) and making some more texture alignment fixes.

Kenshir0 06-11-21 13:11

Great! It's all warking now. Thank you for your good job and the new updated oldgen +. Thanks again

Kenshir0 06-11-21 15:23

I see that invernal outfits have empty squares at the sides of the belt but only in the loading screens. Is this a base game bug or an oldgen + mod bug?

Hey again, thanks for your support :)

The empty squares on the belt are there because I had to remove that section of her belt in order to stop it clipping through her grapple. Itís fine when playing levels because the removed squares are hidden by her grapple and binoculars but in outfit selection, youíll notice her gear doesnít show up. Thatís why you can see the removed squares. I thought this was fine because you only see it for a few seconds when selecting an outfit and it looks perfect outside of that

Kenshir0 07-11-21 19:36

That's ok for me. I was only curious.

It's a great idea to import all the unique belt buckles into Old Gen and it almost feels like collectibles. Keep up the good work!

Hey thank you and nice to see you here again! I agree about the buckles. There’s actually a unique buckle in next gen for the sport outfits too but sadly in old gen she uses the same gear in the sports outfits as the shorts and crop top outfits so it can’t be changed. I’m still finding more and more cool things like this though, going through each level :)

Ameliorator 16-11-21 07:08

OldGen+ Version 2.18

Hi everyone, here's another new update for the OldGen+ mod. Some more random and miscellaneous fixes throughout the game including improved quality of the UI like her weapon aiming reticle, the blue checkpoint diamond and fixing some parts of the inventory square to be more centred.

Firstly, I have been able to create a much higher quality sword of Excalibur texture using concept art of it from the game. In Croft Manor, I found another higher quality texture for one of the portraits. This is the one of Kain from the Legacy of Kain in the main hall. In Peru, I discovered that the glowing orbs in the tomb section were using the incorrect coloured orbs. They're supposed to be purple so I've swapped them for the purple orb in the level files. In Japan, the 3 TVs in the party room had transparent holes in the back of them which glitched so you could see right through the TV to the other side. I found the texture that is supposed to be there filling the holes so I restored that.

There are also a few more fixes for the Japan party guests. I found higher quality version of the outfits in next gen for 4 of the guests. I also corrected the weird shading on one of the dress types.

Hey Ameliorator, I came here to update my version of Legend Upgraded but I'm left feeling a bit lost.

What are the versions you're offering? This is what I've gleaned from reading your posts.

OldGen+ - The main mod. Contains Steve of Warr and ATombRaiderFan's texture fixes, as well as many of your own. Also replaces several low-quality assets with their next-gen equivalents. Choose between "Nishimura with sunglasses (broken reflections)" or "Nishimura with glasses (removed sunglasses' lenses)"

Legend Upgraded - ??? Has enhanced loading screens and skyboxes, maybe other things? Can choose between "Loading Screens Upgraded", "Skyboxes Upgraded (all next-gen skyboxes into Old Gen)", "Skyboxes Upgraded (same as before but without Bolivia)", "Legend Upgraded" is load screens and skyboxes together??

Additional Outfits - Exclusive PSP outfits ported to PC, some dummied outfits too

Hey LateRaider

I apologise if itís unclear what Legend Upgraded is exactly. The way it is set up currently, Legend Upgraded on its own is higher res textures. I made this a separate mod because not everybody will be interested in HD textures and might only want the essential fixes, which are in the OldGen+ mod. The Skyboxes and Loading Screens Upgraded are separate because again, I wanted to offer people the choice of what they would like in their game.

Over the past few weeks though Iíve been making major changes to my mods, making everything clearer and more unified but Iíve been extremely busy with my college studies so I havenít had a lot of time to work on this. I may have to put a hold on Legend Upgraded and just focus on finding more fixes for OldGen+ for the time being. I do have updates for the loading screens which I can share soon though but, for the foreseeable future, Iíll probably just be working on OldGen+. I hope all of this makes sense :)

LateRaider 20-12-21 21:58

It does! Thank you very much. I don't mind having lower-res textures so I would only want OldGen+, which is an enhanced version of Legend Fixes by ATRF. Thank you so much!

So if I've understood all that, basically...

- OldGen+: Forked from ATombRaiderFan's Legend Fixes, which was forked from MachoBroccoli's Attempting to Fix Textures. Corrects texture many, many texture errors in TR:L.
- Legend Upgraded: Several projects. Legend Upgraded itself, higher-res environment textures. Skyboxes, which has higher-res skyboxes (Two versions: One that does and one that does not alter the sky in Bolivia). Loading Screens Upgraded, which has higher-res load screens.
- Additional Outfits: Ports over extra outfits from the PSP version.

Deathly Karma 21-12-21 01:26

Just a mere suggestion and not a demand but is it possible to have Next-Gen styled Load Screens like on 360 and PS3? It's always bothered me that the PC Load Screens are always the same, no matter if it's in Next-Gen mode or not.

Yep that’s exactly right. Legend Fixes is what ATRF has renamed the archived versions of their mods that they started, including OldGen+. I picked up the OldGen+ mod where ATRF left it and it gets it’s new updates in this thread :tmb:

Hey there, thanks for the suggestion. This is something I looked into at the very beginning but unfortunately all loading screens in the game share the same texture files for both Old Gen and Next Gen. It would be nice to have unique load screens for Next Gen but we don’t have the tools to edit that much of the game
