Netflix orders tomb raider anime series

I feel this deserves it's own thread as it's not Live Action.

Quote:

The Tomb Raider anime series will follow the uber-popular Square Enix video game. The series will pick up after the video game reboot trilogy, and follow heroine Lara Croft 25 years after her first game appeared as she explores new territory.

Tomb Raider has led to a global franchise encompassing movies, merchandise and comic books. The new Netflix-Legendary project marks Lara Croft’s first appearance in an animated series. The most recent game release, Shadow of the Tomb Raider garnered great acclaim.

In 2001, Angelina Jolie played the titular heroine in the feature Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and then reprised the role in the 2003 sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. In 2018, Alicia Vikander took over the role of Lara Croft in a new iteration of the film franchise and will step into the role once again in the sequel which will be written and directed by Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green.

The anime series will be written by Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Red Sonja), who will executive produce with dj2 Entertainment Founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson (Sonic the Hedgehog) as well as Stephan Bugaj and Howard Bliss. Jacob Robinson will also serve as EP on this series under his company Tractor Pants.

Unlike Kong, who technically made his anime debut in the sixties with “The King Kong Show,” Lara Croft is stepping into the world of Japanese-style animation 25 years after her first game appearance in 1996. The narrative will pick up after the events of Square Enix’s video-game trilogy reboot (2013-2018), which has received numerous “Best of” nominations and awards. Tasha Huo (“The Witcher: Blood Origin,” “Red Sonja”) will write and executive produce, along with dj2 Entertainment Founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson (“Sonic the Hedgehog,” Stephen Bugaj and Howard Bliss. Robinson, who is also set to executive produce “Skull Island,” will executive produce “Tomb Raider.” The Tomb Raider video games are developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montréal, and published by Square Enix.

The inclusion of “Skull Island” and “Tomb Raider” in Netflix’s growing anime repertoire backs up the claim the streaming giant made last fall about Japanese style animation on the platform: it’s lucrative. The company said that over 100 million households globally watched at least one anime title on the platform between Oct. 2019 and Sept. 2020. Last October, Netflix expanded its roster of anime suppliers, by signing production deals with Anima & Company (owner of NAZ), Science Saru and Mappa from Japan, and with Studio Mir based in Korea.

Apologies, one didn't think to look in the Game Section about a TV show. :)

You raise a good point and I'll look into this. Thank you.

JocLo 27-01-21 16:31

Great news! The future for Tomb Raider looks bright!

paulojr_mam 27-01-21 17:56

It's unfortunate that it's reboot TR and reboot Lara.

Maybe they can repurpose the character and actually make something worthwhile out of her. It's going to be a whole new writing team so it's entirely possible to elevate this shell of a character into something more interesting.

paulojr_mam 27-01-21 23:59

It's interesting how they completely ignore the existence of TR Revisioned and call this the first time Lara appears in an animated series.

That was more of a series of shorts. Not a series’s with one consistent narrative. Even the art style changed at multiple points.

Portugalraider 28-05-21 10:12

Writing for the Netflix series has finished! Hopefully full production starts soon! :)

Also axes, so if there was any doubt this was indeed in the reboot continuity, then I guess this confirms it even more :p

Rai 28-05-21 10:46

So, should this news go in the other thread, or are we sticking with this one? :p

Anyhoo, that's good news.

Anyhoo, that's good news.

I didn't see that someone had already posted the news on the 25th anniversary thread before. My bad :p

Still, I think it is good to have a thread specific for the anime. :)

I was talking about the other dedicated thread linked to above. I don't know if it's okay to have two threads, so I will ask the other mods. It's okay, you didn't know about it. :)

Oh, I didn't even see the link there :vlol::vlol:

Grizzly Bear 28-05-21 13:05

I can't wait to see how the art will be!
This will be the first time we'll get to see Lara since 2018 so it's exciting!

Rai 13-09-21 14:39

Hayley Atwell to voice Lara in the anime:

Not sure if this is the correct thread or not by Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) is the voice of Lara Croft in the anime series.

Hayley Atwell confirmed as Lara Croft voice for anime series.

Oh, Rai and Portugal Raider in the other thread got there first!

Yuna´s Wish 13-09-21 14:44

Just googled Hayley, I'm already in love

Great choice!!!

Mikky 13-09-21 15:01

This is the perfect choice, I am over the moon! Now imagine if she goes on to play Lara in the games :cln:

PinkyPromise 13-09-21 15:05

OMG! Yasssss! Perfect Choice (and Perfect Lara face :S)

Portugalraider 13-09-21 15:08

Atwel is definitely a great casting choice!

But I do kind of wished they kept Camilla.

Then again, new era, new voice! I hope Atwell gets also casted as game Lara. That would be great!

JoelCaesar 13-09-21 15:38

I’m really hoping she’s the new Lara in the games as well!

PinkyPromise 13-09-21 15:40

Me too. The face of Atwel is very old Lara. She looks like a bit Rona Mithra. I wouldn't mind if they used motion capture. I prefer that face than Camilla. She did a good job but she never was Lara Croft.

Chamayoo 13-09-21 15:54

I remember some fans here wishing her as the new voice actress, they should be in heaven right now. :p
Excited news, can't wait to hear her as Lara. I don't know Atwel that much but I just watched one YouTube video of her as Carter and she was good. :)

Rai 13-09-21 16:02

I'm not familiar with Hayley's acting work, but she does have a nice voice and I'm glad for the update on the Netflix show.

I have serious doubts she'd continue as Lara for the games, I think she'd be too expensive, she is a Hollywood star.

Aren't the games having more money for it than the anime, though ? I may be wrong, I'm totally not an expert on economy and industry. :p

Basically yes. And if they don't use her likeness for the model, hiring Atwell can actually get cheaper.

If all the cast were big Hollywood stars, that would be one thing. But just hiring Atwell wouldn't be that much of a problem.

PinkyPromise 13-09-21 16:21

The series is a continuation between Shadow and the new game. It would be weird for them to look for a new voice for the series and then Camilla again. It is clear that the Netflix series is related to games and it would not be strange if it was a presentation of Lara's new voice. Otherwise they would have chosen Camila again.

Tonyrobinson 13-09-21 16:27

Woah that's a huge coup for casting a Marvel actress in a Tomb Raider related property. Huge!

Also she definitely has a more classic vibe to her voice than the modern interpretation. It really does seem like a new era for this Lara.

Didn't think of motion capture and in-game model. Should cost a lot more if they would (likely) do that. Wait and see !

Something they couldn't for their own Marvel's game, ironically. :cln:

The budget for that game would have to be like 300 million and Robert Downey would probably get 1/3 of it. Not worth it.

At any rate, I do wonder how this will work going forward. They talk about unifying the timeline, but then drop Camilla as Reboot Lara's voice actress. I don't know how I'll feel about another voice coming out of that version of the character.

AntRaidsTombs 13-09-21 17:41

Why do people thing Camilla isn’t coming back because she’s not playing the Netflix character? That has nothing to do with anything lol.

Of course they couldn't. Even just one of them would be a bad idea because people would complain "why this one and not the other ones". :D

I certainly am! Hayley has been on my top 3 list for Lara for some time. These news are a dream! I still can't quite believe it!

I really do hope she's also voicing Lara in future games.

Persefone 13-09-21 18:06

OH my god her voice is so perfect for Lara, I remember also watching an interview she did in that Craig Ferguson talkshow years ago and thinking she'd play a flawless live action reboot Lara :jmp: I really hope the devs consider hiring her to voice video game Lara aswell :jmp:

Tonyrobinson 13-09-21 18:51

I will say the anime for me was just a cool little spin off I'd probably not watch or get round to it eventually but with Hayley attached it's officially a day one binge.

It has been mentioned: we know the anime follows Shadow and leads into the unified timeline so it's an interesting decision that they have not chosen Camilla to continue with the voice if they are all connected.

I mean they do this all the time though. For example, MK cartoon movies don’t use the people who play the in game characters. That doesn’t mean Camilla won’t be back.

tomblover 13-09-21 20:48

There's also the fact that Camilla used to bill herself as the voice of Lara in her Twitter bio, but that's not there anymore. I'm not sure when she changed it though. :pi:

Hayley is a popular actress and the anime also takes place right after Shadow. She's isn't a random person that could just fill in for Camilla. They're most likely paying big bucks to have her on board. I don't see them hiring her to just then go back to Camilla for the next game. That wouldn't make much sense tbh.
