Scores of fires spawned over the course of just a few hours in Vietnam and eastern China on April 30, 2005, as this true-color Aqua MODIS image shows. Judging by the number of fires, their size, and the time of year, they are likely agricultural in nature, set to clear land for spring crops. In the top Terra image, the green lands around Hanoi city (center left) are clear of smoke and fires. But just a few hours later when the Aqua MODIS instrument flew over, as shown in the underlying mouse over image, low clouds and scores of fires had spawned over the region. Additionally, the change in sun and satellite angle painted the Red River and its tributaries in molten silver.
