Yeah.

Leik, I can't put it into words but I've had this feeling lately that the game might not be all it's cracked up to be.

I think a lot of the "audience" thought the game was going to be more gamey.

I doubt it, but that doesn't mean SE won't promote the hell out of it.

Yes, the question was about carrying capacity. Karl got it completely wrong and answered about care. What matters what/whom Lara cares or not. :p

After Crossroads trailer for Tomb Raider , we saw a new characters and we saw Sam a friend of Lara .

I'm pretty sure that's her on the left .

I'm just going to have to stop looking at this game as tomb raider and treating it like a new franchise because that's really what it is. And looking at from that view point, I'm less disappointed by the game and well wait. My opinion of the game doesn't change at all. Nevermind.

Better to be disappointed by something you don't care about though I guess.

I'll re-post here something I just said in the MGC TR9 thread, it seems somewhat relevant to what you said...

"Honest opinion?"
"Yeah."
"It looks awful."

For once, those weren't my my words. They were the words of a friend of mine (a non-TR fan and not that much of a gamer) after I showed him the Turning Point & Crossroads trailer last night. He kind of liked the Turning Point trailer, but he liked it in the same way he likes things like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, he thought the CGI was impressive. But he baulked at the gameplay footage in the Crossroads trailer. He muttered "what the hell?" during that shot of Lara ducking & covering amid a gunfight, tutted when he saw the helicopter and said "for God's sake" while watching Lara creeping through the burning village (which is quite a statement from him as he's very religious). I asked him what he meant when he said it looked awful, it's not like the graphics are actually crap. He said that, even though he doesn't play Tomb Raider, he knew what it was about, he'd seen me play most of them at one point or another. But what the Crossroads trailer had showed him was nothing like any Tomb Raider he was aware of.

I told him that the game was more or less based around Lara, her origins, and why she became the arse-kicking Indy rip-off we all know. To which he simply asked why? It kind of caught me on the hop if I'm honest, I didn't quite know what he meant, and he asked why anyone would care about who she was and why she did what she did. It didn't make sense to him, he thought people played games for the game, not the story. He ended with saying it looked more like a boring Schwarzenegger film.

Well he knows nothing about TR so it's obvious that he doesn't care for Lara.

just*raidin*tomb 23-06-12 08:54

I don't much care for Lara THIS much either. It's ridiculous.

I gave up on MGC a long time ago. I wish I could access it.

While I agree with you on most things Spong, I think the graphics are nice. But then again amazing graphics don't thrill me so maybe that has something to do with it. I think the story is intriguing though. If it was a movie, I would be stoked to see it, ya know? Why not? But it's a game with a fresh coat of cinema and it is terrible.

They talk about depth in the gameplay

Huge open hub spaces

Wide range of mechanics

Puzzles

Tombs

But I'm sorry all I'm seeing is a linear movie.

see that's how the majority of people will look at a female game. Tomb raider is trying to break that treand. Ok he says the graphics look bad but the graphics are just a little lower than that of Uncharted 2 which I think is a good achievement. The game didn't win game of show for nothing. I imagine that your friend think assassins creed or halo will be awesome right? That's a gamers response these days, they go for the game that's overly popular than a game that's overly better than anything on the market. This tomb raider story seems to be really good and the gameplay is looking even better. A lot of people are hoping the game fails bc they can't stand the thought of a woman being on top again. P.S. if uncharted starred a woman, it would not have been successful at all in the day and age it came out

Assassin's Creed III looks genuinely awesome. "Overpopularity" has nothing to do with it.

Assassin's Creed 3 looks genuinely boring but with a major nationalism theme this time.

Sorry it's not cinematic enough for you. Nationalism again, has nothing to do with it.

When did I say I liked cinematics? Everything about it just looks boring including gameplay. What do you mean by "Nationalism has nothing to do with it"? Of course it does. It's unnecessary and untrue to the real historical events. I wouldn't care if they didn't pride themselves on historical accuracy.

Nationalism has nothing to do with its popularity. Bottomline, ACIII has showed me more intriguing gameplay in under 6 minutes than Tomb Raider has in all of it's half hour or so that its showed.

AC has the exploration that I fail to see in anything I've seen from this TR game thus far, despite that it's boasted as a major pillar.

Because I'm a tomb raider fan I have to think its better than every game? Are you serious?

I'm not going to blindly put a game over every other game just because I've really enjoyed past ones. Especially when I don't like what I see. That's ignorant.

Excuse me, I'm going to have an aneurysm.

AC is barely 6 months away from release so obviously it's going to be showing gameplay by now. TR is like 9 months and has been focusing on Lara so far because that's biggest thing that's changed. TR hasn't really ever been about varied gameplay anyway and I don't want that to change.

AC has always been an open world game. TR has never been an open world game yet it looks more open world than ANY of the past TR games, including the classics. We've seen a SMALL hub and it looks massive. What more do you want?

I didn't say that. I think max payne is better than tomb raider but I don't say that tomb raider doesnt do this like max payne and max payne has this and tomb raider doesnt. If you like a game better than tomb raider then that's ok but why brag about it on a tomb raider forum? I honestly don't get why people put down this game so much when they know they are gonna get it when it comes out. What's the point in that? AC is open world so umm common sense would tell a person it has more exploration :) . Just cause 2 has more exploration than tomb raider, lol even grand theft auto bc they are two different genres.

Points for being more clear. Thanks. (not sarcasm, I promise)

But bragging about it? No... :p

This is a public tomb raider forum, a place to discuss and express concerns regarding tomb raider. And if a game is doing exploration better than a game that boasts about exploration (but appears very linear) then something just...isn't right.

I'm getting this game when it comes out because it's tomb raider. Not because I love what I see. And that's the honest truth. :p

The only reason AC was mentioned is because you said it was only popular because gamers go for the "more popular game". I think it's popular because it appears to have some fun gameplay. But we disagree and that's fine.

Well obviously your negative views on TR rub off on him and it's your opinion that you don't like the new Lara but it's not any more valid than anyone else's opinion who plays and enjoys past TR games yet does like the new Lara.

I was talking about his friend who has never played a TR game in his life and isn't interested in games so obviously your going to gather opinions about things from people who know stuff about it. That's nature. How does he know what a "real" TR game is like if he's never played one? Ummm because Spong has told him about it and he's seen Spong play it a couple of times.

Just refer back to your sass gifs and you'll understand perfectly.

I have done nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

Let's just back track, shall we? I state some things regarding AC, that I think it does better than Tomb Raider. Maybe acknowledge a few things that I don't like. You of course respond to my post because you disagree with it (which is perfectly 100% okay :tmb:). And then I respond by stating that I'd rather not continue the discussion because I didn't see much point considering the chances of us reaching a mutual understanding were sly, which you can see here:

Then you had to make sure that you cut off the conversation, because you're too good for that. Of course I pointed it out, because I found it incredibly immature. I did nothing.

And yes your gifs are incredibly insulting and ooze superiority complex.

What views? I don't talk to him about TR, why would I? He's 38 and he has a wife and kids, we have better/more important things to talk about. He saw the two trailers because I was playing on my Xbox when he came round and he's always mildly curious as to what games/demos/other guff I've got. What he said was based pretty much on what he saw in the trailers compared to his knowledge of the games from the past. And he has played TR himself, I should've pointed out that he used to own AoD on PS2 (but I bought it off him). He owns Legend too.

But as a whole, although he was specifically talking about TR9, what he said can be applied to a lot of games. In its simplest terms, he doesn't understand why people who play games nowadays seem to actually want a film and not a game.

I posted it because it was, in some part, relevant to what larafan had said.

I'm not solely talking about this conversation. You're always sarcastically replying to someone's comment, trying to come off as if you're better than them. If it were anyone else then I would admit that i'd have overreacted but I probably wouldn't have done it at all if it were anyone else. I just don't like the way you look down on people.

Maybe you should have pointed out that he has played TR before you said that "he doesn't play TR," and I wouldn't have misunderstood.

I don't understand why people want a film instead of playing a game for the price of a game nowadays either but we've only seen like 30 minutes so far and it's obvious that you show the more actiony stuff. That's how most companies market their games.

Yeah, I could've (and should've) been clearer, but I didn't say "he doesn't play TR". I said he wasn't a fan of the games, and that's been true since he bought Legend.
