Exactly! And it's not even worthy of falling under the TRF drama category...

Lara and Tomb Raider in name only. There hasn't been a real Tomb Raider with Lara Croft since 2003

Do we really know that though? We can only assume, really. But both classic Lara and reboot Lara experience trauma that effects their character and intends to provoke a change in lifestyle or perspective.

I try looking at Lara's strength through 2 dimensions.

The first dimension is pre-truamatic experience. Where she is still a strong character, she climbs mountains in her spare time, apparently. For the thrill maybe? (This is actually a reboot thing). And that in itself is bad ass, for a "civilian". These experiences incite thrill and danger, but it's not live or die, it's not as severe as the truama experience each Lara encounters.

Then of course there is the strength that comes through the real truamatic experience, and just because this experience tests and breaks Lara, it doesn't mean she wasn't a strong person to begin with. She's brave, she's smart, she's strong, but she has a limit prior to being exposed to the worst.

It could have been the same for classic Lara. Who was she prior to surviving the plane wreck?

People often use young Lara from TR4 and TR5 as a gauge for how fearless, and how much of "herself" was already there when she was young, prior to the plane crash. But I still think they are 2 different dimensions. No doubt there is real danger involved in what young Lara experienced, however the tone never tried to convey what the reboot does.

Of course you can accept that, if your Lara is more of a "cartoon" (for lack of a better word) then she was brave, and the same person in the young Lara levels.

But if that is not what you expect from your Lara, that she does grow and isn't as simplistic, then shouldn't this new portrayal of Lara be starting some fire?

spyrostr 23-05-13 16:48

has anyone seen this?

Should be firing...

What do you mean? Are we talking about the same Lara who pulled a spike out of her side, bit a guy's ear off, shot him in the face, walked through a pool of blood, etc, etc.
She did indeed whimper, but she also protected herself.

And that's why old Lara was such a 2d character. People do have emotions, and anybody who was put into the situation that Lara had to go through would be an emotional wreck, but I guess there are people who don't like for games or certain characters to actually express them....

Its a cookie cutter hollywood way to add so called "emotions" to the character. I can imagine them doing this to a perfectly good character like indiana jones and i shudder. It cliched version of emotions and humanity

larafan25 23-05-13 16:58

But experiences do change people, and this experience, this landmark in Lara's origins has always existed, since the beginning as far as I've known.

Since the reboot, it's the only experience that exists.

I wouldn't know why they should be firing the level designers. I thought it was the best level design TR has seen in years....

Hm. This seems really vague, and it seems like more of an attempt to say something bad about the game than to actually provide a good counterpoint? I mean, if you feel that way, back it up with something from the game that gave you that feeling... so it seems less vague, you know? :p

larafan25 23-05-13 17:06

^I thought the level design was kind of...non-existent in some parts, or so simple and to the point.

Of course there were cool nooks, and the design of the events was incredibly well done.

But I guess I just expect...more interior exploration.

That we've played.

Y'all don't know what went down that night in Brighton.

Anyways, I assume Lara's just going to become more enjoyable for those who can't stand to see her wimper.

CD seem to want to portray her as a brutal action hero, or something like that.

However that in itself isn't equal to classic Lara bad assery, simply because she's brutal and capable. There's more skill and charm to it than that. But whatevsiez.

Oh you mean moving in straight lines were you can mash buttons and don't have to do any exploration....

To make her human they have given her no distinct identity. She is a cookie cutter human being. I don't really care about her

Well, if they've brought new fans to series, which they have, they must have done something to give her some sort of distinct identity.
Or maybe there was good level design. Something was good about this game, it has done well.

Ardent Pizza 23-05-13 17:14

I utterly confused, to be honest.

I can't decide if CD should follow the path of action aesthetics, character exploration and stereotyped Hollywood glamour or the aspect of concentrating on open world exploration, platforming , puzzle solving and freedom.

I actually want them to focus on both aspects but we just had too much character exploration in the reboot. I want more freedom.

The next game.

Well, the next game has to be more about gameplay and levels and not about Lara.

Move from one predictable area to the next with shiny highlights and more or less linear gameplay.

I've been there a couple of times, not recently though. It's rubbish, full of archaeology students funding their drug habits with prostitution.

Okay, well then maybe you can explain to me how they kept the max view distance ratio of their HQ distance textures at such a high level without slower fps and fading? Or maybe you can explain how they were able to change Lara's game mode and animation set (similar to how they did with Lara going from walking, to sliding down the river, to parachute scene) without loading screens, because, as an aspiring level designer, I've been curious to know. :)

^Guurl, they can do that stuff with the flick of a wand, we can't just script things in the LE like they can. TBH.

In the original cutscene where Lara meets up with Sam and Mathias, Lara reminds Sam of "that night in Brighton" in which perhaps a similar scenario with a creepy man ensued and they needed to escape. Sam maybe not being the best judge of character.

Alternatively it was a lot of fun and Lesbiany and was made into a movie:

:vlol: I see.

Well, judging from Sam's journals they had "fun" in many places, ranging from Bulgaria to mountains. Brighton might have been one of those places :p !

larafan25 23-05-13 17:35

Honestly.

This is bad to say, and I shouldn't. No no. But I will.

I'D LOOOOVE to see an even...slightly younger Lara, maybe 20 (lol) with Sam, in some exotic city, just messing around, sneaking out of a balcony, something that plays sort of like the flashback level in Uncharted 3. It would be so awesome. I wanna see them get into trouble and be mischievous. It could be like an Olsen Twins movie.

But no. This is bad. >_>

She was underage. That alone should be a reason to avoid anything sexual.
