What did you like or dislike about TR Legend

Since there isn't an appreciation or unappreciation thread, I figured I'd start this one for TR Legend.

At this point I can't think of anything I didn't like about the game. If I do I'll post it later. Overall I liked TR Legend.

Actually, there are such threads. Here is the unappreciation thread, started last year. In contrast, the appreciation thread is much older.

I loved everything about Legend. I loved the new Manor design, I loved how fresh Legend felt back in 2006, it really felt like a breathe of fresh air. It's globe trotting structure and light hearted narrative is what I love the most. I do hate the parent storyline and the fact the game was so short, but it is still a lovely gem.

Okay I should have said there's no appreciation or unappreciation thread for TR Legend.

There are such threads for Tomb Raider Legend. I provided links to them in my previous post in this thread.

What I like :

- Lighthearted tone
- Strong story
- Fun combat
- Pleasant and fluid controls
- Interesting and varied locations
- Lara's model and personality
- Secret system
- Vanilla graphics
- No white ledges
- Some cool traps
- Cool boss fights
- Good soundtrack
- Keeley Hawles

What I don't like :

- Too short
- Too easy
- Too streamlined
- A tad too action focused
- You just fight mercenaires (and some dogs and cheetas)
- Carrying only two weapons seems a bit too restrictive
- Lack of precision in boss fights
- Next gen graphics (PC)

Greenapple968 18-07-21 14:19

Overall I dislike Legend. The England level was what I disliked the most about Legend.

Frceghst8 18-07-21 14:40

Call me a geek if you like, I loved wielding Excalibur. :jmp:
Wielding Soul Reaver in the Xbox version.

Jathom95 18-07-21 18:11

I'll do a wide sweep and say that Legend is probably the best game of the LAU timeline and Crystal's work in general with Tomb Raider. But it's still far too simplified to what came before puzzle-wise and the story is incredibly short. I did like the take on Arthurian lore in general, but even that was strangely discarded by the time of Underworld. Why they went the route of Norse mythology instead still baffles me, it's been done to death.

Frceghst8 18-07-21 18:37

I really liked the levels of (Tibet ?) Ice caves, slides that can lead to death, breakable poles, platforms, ceiling spikes, etc.

Are you referring to Nepal?

xdesperado_ 18-07-21 18:52

Positives:

- I liked that it borrowed some influences from the first TR movie (dual pistol design, the manor, and having a team of people working for Lara. But I still dislike Alister)
- Lara's character & Keeley Hawes' performance
- The acrobatic movements
- Combat was fun
- Amanda's design
- The soundtrack (the last great TR OST imo)
- Croft Manor (TR3 manor is still my favourite, but this one is a close second)
- The boss fights
- The time trials & collectible system
- Great variety of locations
- The variety of costumes
- The replay value was high
- As much as I love AOD, it was nice going back to the happy, adventurous tone

Negatives

- Alister Fletcher
- The difficulty was too forgiving (even on Hard mode)
- The linear level design
- There could've been more variety with the weapons
- Short game length. Nepal is one of my absolute favourite levels, but it just felt so short.
- The story wasn't terrible, but it was the genesis of the whole parents drama. I did quite like the mythology though.
- The conversations with Zip & Alister via headset, which is an immersion breaker
- The bike riding sequences (especially the Kazakhstan one, it goes on far too long)
- There could've been more variety with the weapons
- Lara auto-grabbing when I don't want her to.
- The flashlight (I much would've preferred flares like in the beta version)
- I didn't like the grapple much, Anniversary's version was better.
- Repetitive enemies
- QTE's
- I prefer Lara's beta design, with the long braid

Frceghst8 18-07-21 18:56

Nepal, yes that's the one. Thanks Jathom 95.

I failed to see what games have Norse mythology before Underworld in 2008. It was never done to the series before. I think it was done to death after this game release : Skyrim, God of War 4, AC Valhalla, ect.
I don't really quite share this opinion, Egypt has been done to death for instance but it's a good classic so it's no difference for me. :p

I mean, it's the same deal with Egypt. TR4 and The Mummy sort of cemented the idea that if it involves tombs and ancient relics, that Egypt is a staple. And in TR4's case, Core only set the game there because of how popular it was in TR1.

My gripe with it specifically comes from having no buildup prior to Underworld. Legend focuses on pseudo-Arthurian lore, then Anniversary does a 180 towards Atlantean culture strictly because of Natla, then Underworld suddenly becomes about her ushering in Ragnarok through the Midgard Serpent. Where was any of that in the previous two games? What is Natla's connection to all of that even though she was established as an Atlantean queen alongside Tihocan and Qualopec? The list goes on.

Underworld might've been the first big game series to tackle it at the time, but Norse mythology has been a popular topic in general for a good while now.

Frceghst8 18-07-21 20:03

I just had a thought, I would have loved to face off with yetis in the Nepal levels

This was/is my favourite TR game. It really got me into the TR series, etc. I started TRL on the PC, but once I got it on xBox, I was hooked. I didnít mind the parent storyline. I like all the others too, but this one has a special place for me. :)

Yeah I agree thought, it was poorly linked to Legend and Anniversary. Maybe the mythology should have been one or two level max, mixed with Celtic locations to make the transition better. Without being too much about arthurian legend of course, because I don't think two games in a row dealing with the same myth/legend would be a good idea. Even if I would love to see the real Avalon !

Frceghst8 19-07-21 19:58

^ The real Avalon? LoL, there is no "real Avalon". How about Avalon in the TR universe.

Likes:

The Story was Interesting

Lara's animation and her acrobats

Some Puzzles were lots of Fun

The soundtrack

The model and the Voice Actress

The secrets were amazing and very well hidden I wish everything about the game was as difficult to get

Dislikes

Very Short

Very Easy and almost linear

No Braid

Too much Alister and Zip

Although Classics had that, but from TRL I did not like too much repetitiveness of the gameplay

Too much mercenaries to kill

Legend is my favorite TR game next to the first Eidos one. It's decidedly different than the rest of the series to that point, but in a way that was a good thing, because it shook up the status quo. Yet it still felt like a Tomb Raider game.

I didn't even mind Alister and Zip, because Lara's snarky personality shined when they chimed in.

I also didn't mind that it was significantly shorter than most of the series to that point- the way I figure, it didn't overstay its welcome (hello, TR4) and gave a great experience while it lasted.

The puzzles were actually enjoyable, and a big part of it is they were relegated to one room; you didn't have to do pointless, long backtracking like most of the Eidos games.

The unlockable outfits gave an incentive to collect all the secrets, unlike the Eidos games where the secrets were more bragging rights than anything else.

Only level I'm not crazy about is Kazakhstan, but even that's not THAT bad. It's certainly no Lud's Gate.

DOPE 28-07-21 11:10

I definitely have a love/hate relationship with this game so letís see..

<3

the best writing Crystal ever did
lighthearted and adventurous
voice acting for every character
level design, without a doubt Crystalís best
Laraís movement and acrobatics are great
I love playing through Tokyo, Ghana and London
puzzles are fun although too linear

</3

way too scripted most of the time
boss fights are mostly annoying
platforming wasnít challenging enough
should have been a standalone story
whoever thought those bike sections were fun to play.. I wanna talk
story would have been perfectly fine without pouring mommy drama into it

Blackmoor 28-07-21 13:44

Like

-Diases
-Time travel concept
-Idea of a world-wide mythology speaking of a lost ancient society
-Avalon
-King Arthur and dragons
-Some emotional elements (when Lara finds her mother's brooch and holds it in her hand, I felt teary. I felt a real sense of loss)
-Alistair and Zip (It's 50:50. As characters I don't mind them but some of their implementation is cheesy and intrusive into gameplay)
-Some of the dialogue is good
-"Make sense right this second or I swear I'll execute you where you stand..."
-Lara is very pretty
-Keely is a genuinely good voice actress
-The overall story is intriguing enough to carry the game
-Soundtrack (the theme song played at the title screen is one of my favourites for TR, and the whole soundtrack is pleasant and appropriate for TR)

Dislike

-Cliffhanger ending - just as I felt the game got going, it finished. The cliffhanger was the wrong kind of cliffhanger and it came too early.
-The game is too short
-The butler as Lara's father figure (It felt a bit cringey to me and he looked like Blake Carrington from the old TV series, Dynasty, rather than an actual butler)
-Amanda goth vibes. I'm just not into that.
-Some of the dialogue is cheesy to me.
-Gameplay is too easy and I don't like the prescriptive way of defeating the bosses (shoot the bell to attract the serpent, grapple the lever, etc, etc)
-The shooting on bikes segments
-Japan segment
-Simplistic and predictable level design. To me this was the start of lack of surprise and awe in the level design which I always felt the originals had.

Overall, it's a fun, cartoony game. I think the story is where it shines most as the mystery is genuinely interesting. And I like some of the characterisations of the characters too.

Frceghst8 29-07-21 18:33

Hmm, Lara doesn't need mommy/ daddy issues since in the original story Lara was disowned by her parents. The ending needed to resolved better. I'll comment more if This post gets a response.

Heckler 02-08-21 01:39

What I liked:
The new gameplay direction. Getting rid of tank controls and grid jumps was much needed for TR. Also loved how diverse and beautiful the levels were.

What I disliked:
The overall lighthearted/immature tone of the game. It was just too put on at times. The trailers looked badass and serious but the game almost felt like a children's game and collecting hidden relics/beating timetrials to play Barbie dress-up didn't really help the game to take itself seriously.

Frceghst8 10-08-21 20:31

I definitely liked the locations, I liked the new targeting features, I absolutely liked wielding Excalibur. Call me a geek if you like. :ton:

JAMJOOM 17-08-21 01:23

love this

One of the best games
But it was technically neglected
And the NG version of it looks very ugly

Frceghst8 17-08-21 13:05

Odd, it didn't seem technically neglected to me. :ponder:
Could someone perhaps leave a post or two in the "has anyone unlocked Soul Reaver thread?" It is sadly neglected. :(

gr00tcake 17-08-21 19:31

My only complaint is that it's way too short. Other than that, it's one of my favourites in the series, probably even THE favourite

I was glad when I reached the end of Legend; I didn't enjoy playing the game. :p

Frceghst8 18-08-21 01:42

Well to each their own Greenapple. I enjoyed it, I just wasn't thrilled about the change to Lara's back story. The original story was perfect for Lara imho.

NYCL@R@ 21-08-21 19:20

I like the game as a whole. What I will say is seeing all the beta stuff this month really makes me feel like the game got simplified from its potential. Especially the length and some outfits that couldíve been fun to replay with.

Frceghst8 21-08-21 20:07

I'm guessing that's either PC only or streaming.
