gidierre 27-03-10 11:54

[UPDATE] Version 1.7.8.4 of my TR1/UB installer

(where "my" = made using dosbox 0.73 by dosbox devs' team, glide patch by gulikoza, audiopack hack by kmo, InnoSetup by J. Russell)

as for me, other than putting the pieces together and adding a tweak or three, my two cents of direct contribution are mentioned here
at the end of post #7 where I rattle on about the alleged "undeclared Tomb Raider 1 survival beyond WinXP project" :p
see also posts #9 and 10

v1.6 is out
that makes version 1.4.2 somewhat obsolete, in that the cdrom image now carries all the playstation audio tracks which the pc cd is missing and which (thx to KMO's work) can now be heard ingame
the installer makes them transparently available
also, loading the tunes from image means better performance vs. a replacement cdrom
v1.5 is still there, much lighter (some 5 MB only) as it has no image, then again without all the image's pros, from speed gain and gameplay smoothness to psx tracks extension

System Requirements

Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8/8.1 and 10
either 32 or 64 bit versions

At least 636.9 MB of free disk space.

Installation Guide

You only have to run the program. It has been designed as a self-extracting installer tool to make all the procedure as user-friendly as can be.
Once the game is installed, you will find shortcuts on your desktop and Start menu to play.

Features

This package installs both TR1 and TRUB files and complete setups, and also Dosbox 0.73 with Glide patch and DirectX9 update, already set and configured to play on Windows XP through 10 32/64bit straight out of the box.

It includes a complete working cdrom image of the original TR1 cdrom too.
Owners of a Sold Out copy of TR1 this way shall be able to hear the music from the pc cdrom soundtracks again, which Sold Out version is missing.
Due to legal considerations, owning a legitimate TR1 cdrom is still required to play, but no accesses get done to the drive, as all files are loaded from cd image copied on hard disk. This way, speed and cdrom longevity are enhanced as the game engine doesn't need to read cd contents anymore.

Self-detects correct cdrom drive letter and CPU 32/64bit architecture.

v1.6 only adds the psx tracks feature, installing them with the new and larger image so they're just there on hard disk, ready to play

about cdrom, well you know :( I'd been told to add that double cd check in the script to avoid legal issues and I haven't taken it away ever since of course

it's still there just like in v1.4, only as a check for cdrom presence in the drive (and it has to be just the real TR1 cd) every time the game gets started via tr1/ub shortcuts
but actually it doesn't access the drive thereafter since the mounted image is used instead (that's why you/I have the pc cdrom as usual, with no psx tracks, yet can hear psx tunes as loaded from cd image)

so yes, I guess if you want you can take the cd out once gameplay has begun ;)
it shouldn't break the running app (namely dosbox loading image and running tr1/ub) because after the cd check is through it doesn't bother/need it anymore, hence the longevity and performance boost I referred to here in post #9 and #10.

TRfan23 28-03-10 16:35

^ Yeh that's why I was chuffed so I can use my original TR1 Sold out CD instead of the custom one I had to make for missing soundtracks ;)

Okies :) Yeh I can take the disc out of the drive safely during gameplay :)

Maybe if you can get permission from Eidos, you could implement a disc check once so you won't need the disc in the drive after the first check from then on. Bit like TR2 & TR3 except they replace the original .exes with patched ones, so then it just seems to be inline with the way TR2 & 3 run.

btw I'm only suggesting that because I'm OCD on how things are organized :p
If legal issues are a concern then forget about it ;)

Oh yeh and the game runs fine :tmb:

Are you implying there's some way to run TR2 besides leaving the disk in the drive all the time? If so, what do you do?

Tomb Raider Series Multi Patch ;)

Works like a charm :) It asks to put in TR2 disc in drive like TR3 :)

It's also in the XP/Vista patch to :)

afaict, even if I never really tried, the only way could be through an image, possibly a plain .iso which one would be supposed to load, but certainly not via dosbox this time (dosbox would have no clue how to handle TR2 and 3). Mounting through a virtual cd for windows application would probably do.

I know, I'd be happy to, but you see they're not gonna let me/us/anyone
actually so it goes that just the opposite pattern will rule: the installer itself pays no heed to whatever the cd drive hosts, the cd checks must be passed instead each time the game starts :(

P.S. ;)

although I already did a couple video tutorials about these installers available here:
http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/tr1...tionalsoftware
under optional software
using Wink, same freeware I made my dosbox primers/tutorials with,

now I felt like making another one, 49-second video which I youtubed here:

Phlip 30-04-10 15:29

The sound effects are still about a second late and now the game's really bright which makes it look washed out. The only problem the previous installer had was the late sound effects.

gamma issues were easy to meet through dgVoodoo, and yet pretty easy to fix too there (via dgvoodoosetup.exe)
with Dosbox I never had them
and it's a good thing since it would seem that there's no way to adjust them ;)
of course one's gfx card driver could :)
otoh,
I'd really like to know what your hardware specs are (please post a diagnose.exe report)

and anyway have you tried the patch "for fmv's" I included in the 1.6 installer?
that not only targets fmv conundrums, but resets the videodriver settings altogether so it *might* help a lot with some cards and with a number of poor performance issues
so what is yours?

Phlip 30-04-10 18:56

It's ok, I've gone back to your previous installer. The one which didn't use dosbox. Is there a seperate patch for FMVs to work with your previous installer?

I guess you mean the one using dgvoodoo/vdmsound/ssdh right?
where gamma values can be tweaked at will via dgvoodoosetup
(as long as you're on x86/32bit machines... :p)

a patch for fmvs with that installer..
no, not afaik
the one I made up is to use with sdl libraries that dosbox links to, but dgVoodoo doesn't so it can't possibly apply
there it's all made via dege's dgvesa.com (that's just 16bit code) which I launch in the starting batch

btw if you have dege's readme_eng.txt shipping with dgVoodoo packet you can read the chapter on VESA emulation there
dege also frankly stated: this project is not about developing VESA to the perfectness...

it must be noted the dgvoodoosetup vesa emu page has many choices, like
Refresh frequency
Emulated video memory
Mode 13h support

that could be tried

remember that the graphics card/driver brand may be most relevant here.

SLAYER 30-04-10 19:54

talking about 1.6 aren't we

when it's fullscreen... it's just that :)
dosbox's not even in charge there, the glide wrapper is
iow in \tombraider\openglid.ini the InitFullScreen=1 line calls the shots
then it gets stretched to the max res your display can get, and pillarboxed on widescreens, but you can't go higher than so

otoh if for some reason you want to customize res
you'd have to start windowed

(how? setting InitFullScreen=0)

then opening the \tombraider\dosbox*.conf files
namely dosbox for 32bit, dosboxtr164 and dosboxub64 for TR1/64bit and TRUB/64bit
finding these items:
fullscreen=
windowresolution=

you can set fullscreen=false and windowresolution=whatever makes any sense
save and see what it's like

did this answer your question?

The download link is not working for me, it says it is Currently Unavailable.
Has it been taken down or something?
EDIT: Works now.
I have another problem, when I open the game it goes through the FMV's, but when it gets to the menu a screen pops up saying "You are running a non-accelerated OpenGL" then when I click okay, another screen pops saying "Severe Problem: OpenGL_GL_EXT_packed_pixels extension is required for OpenGLide" then when I click okay for that it closes and DosBox crashes.

TheBloodRed 02-05-10 09:18

I just have to say thank you for this!! Finally a TR1 thingy that works near perfect!! The other patches and such don't work very well and this one just noms all the cake!!

Soul 02-05-10 12:39

I can second this. I have some smaller issues (game is very bright (not a problem, as I can change my monitor settings) and it's sometimes quite slow) but this is finally an installer that works like a charm for me and finally I can play TR1 with all those beautifiul audiotracks that were in the PS-version. :D

known problem with some graphics card/driver versions
it never happened to me, but it sure affected some like in this case
no case for blaming dosbox or glidos anyhow since the card's own OpenGL capability is the "linchpin" here

solutions...

update drivers if possible (on laptops it may be hard to do)

post a complete diagnose.exe report here (what gfx card is yours? nVidia, Ati, Intel...)

but still the simplest trick available could well be:
if you're using v1.6 toggle the sdl videodriver from windib to directx (which your videodriver may be happy of)
and that (I hope) can be easily done, driver update aside, just applying the "patch for fmv problems"
yes, even as you have no problems at all with those fmv's you can still try and install the patch to see if while on its way it fixes the OpenGL issue your card troubles over
HTH

Game is bright because that is how TR1 is(especially with the Mipmapping). TR1 only has white lighting and NO FLARES so of course it is going to be a tad brighter than you are used to. :P

TR2 was innovative because it included darkness as well as other things. ;)

Problem running TR1+UB after using DosBox installer

Hello I had to buy a new computer recently, and it came installed with Windows 7 Home 64 bits. I was sad when I found out that I couldn't play Tomb Raider and Unfinished Business anymore... :(

When I searched for solutions, I found your TR1/UB Dosbox installer and I installed it without problems, but when I try to run Tomb Raider or Unfinished Business, 3 windows open up:

-DosBox
-DosBox Status Window
-Tomb Raider

And after immediately after that, the two DosBox windows immediately close, leaving only the third window (called Tomb Raider) open, but nothing happens anymore and the game won't start... :(

I tried your version 1.6 first, then 1.5 and then 1.4.2, all with my original TR1/UB CD-ROMs in the drive, tried the patches, but none of them worked... :(

Maybe other people reported this problem and do you know a solution for it?

I hope you can help me, thank you in advance!

TheBloodRed 06-05-10 17:37

Explain more in depth what happens. The three windows are perfectly okay.

-TR1 Game booting(and checking for disc)
-DOSBOX config
-DOSBOX starting up.

After those do their things, all but the TR1 game one go away. The DOSBOX one full screens then closes and a Core status window will appear and the TR1 Game one will fullscreen.
--

This is the way it should work. What CD-ROM drive are you running it from? If it isn't the lowest letter(A lowest, Z highest) then there may be trouble connecting with the disc.
Is it giving you the "Please, insert Tomb Raider 1 cdrom and start anew." message??

You may need to mount your disc drive to another, but no need to mess with that unless you really need it. It is a simple fix, but can get annoying. xD

EDIT: To save time, I put the fix for it up for all to see!!

To mount a drive as another one so DOSBOX will read the disc:

Run DOSBOX from the install folder.

In the command console type:

mount e c:\ -t cdrom

*Where "e" is the drive your CD-ROM is really in. (mine is drive E but yours may be different)
*Where "c:\" is the drive the patch is looking for the disc. (C is the highest so I suggest it)

Hit enter and it should give you a message that "e" has been mounted as "c". Type "exit" and hit enter.

Run the TR1 exe and watch DOSBOX load up your game! :jmp:

dutchrheeren 06-05-10 18:08

Thank you for quick response, I hope somebody can help me:

I only have one CD/DVD drive, called F: (C, D and E are hard disk partitions, and I have no A or B drive).

When I try to run TR1 or UB, I never get any message like: "Please insert the CD-ROM".

It is like I said: when I click the TR1 or UB executables (or the shortcuts on my desktop), the three windows open, and the two DosBox windows immediately close.

The DosBox one shortly displays an orange DosBox logo, then goes blank, and closes, all in less than a second but it never goes full screen.

Together with the DosBox window, the DosBox config window also closes: neither of them go full screen before closing.

The third window called Tomb Raider stays open, even after the two DosBox windows have closed. But the Tomb Raider window also never goes full screen.

When the two DosBox windows are closed, the Tomb Raider window just has a black DOS screen with a blinking underscore _ and nothing else. It stays that way until I force it to close.

I tried to mount my CD-ROM drive like you said in your edit of your post, but instead of:
Quote:

mount e c:\ -t cdrom
I used:
Quote:

mount f c:\ -t cdrom
because my drive is F

After that, DosBox says:
Quote:

MSCDEX: Mounted subdirectory: limited support
Drive F is mounted as CDRom c:\
I type exit and conform to exit DosBox.

But still when I try to run the installed TR1 or UB, none of the windows go full screen, the two DosBox windows immediately close, and the Tomb Raider 1 stays open but does nothing. So unfortunately, that solution didn't work for me... :(

TheBloodRed 06-05-10 18:26

It shouldn't just do nothing. It doesn't even give a message? Insane. O-o;;

Let me do some tests and see what I can find out. Are you sure you have all the files you need to run the game? (especially the .bin and .cue files!!)

EDIT: Oh, and maybe a screenshot would be nice too. xD

BloodRed, my installer from v0.1 on just self detects the correct cdrom letter
no need to mount any other drive, even if it was "right",
much less to run dosbox from the folder I make it use

what you're suggesting may generally be valid for a plain, standard dosbox installation, I say generally because the mount syntax is all wrong
but I sure won't recommend anyone to play with my setup this way, not because it's "forbidden" but because I don't expect that to be feasible/promising in the least
if anything, I suggest to try and rebuild a dosbox installation from scratch (and to a different folder)

EscondeR 06-05-10 19:28

dutchrheeren, if the advice right above helps not for some reason, create a separate thread in Technical Support for your issue, run Diagnose.exe and include the report in your post.

as I said, manually tweaking the cdrom mounting can't possibly work
surely not within the framework of my installer(s)

let's take a big step back instead
first uninstall everything related to all my installers (start menu or control panel)
now I need to know your hardware/software specs first

please post a diagnose.exe report.

EDIT
btw as you wrote
Quote:

After that, DosBox says:
Quote:
MSCDEX: Mounted subdirectory: limited support
Drive F is mounted as CDRom c:\
this alone is completely wrong and will break all routines I made
a mscdex mounted subdirectory is just doomed
IOW dosbox *seems* to interpret your hdd as a cdrom drive, understand?
the reason this is broken is simply that the mount command syntax doesn't work that way

(you can found info in the dosbox readme
"mount a b"
any other flags aside
means you mount b as a and not a as b, OK?)

mount d f:\ -t cdrom
comes closer to what dosbox expects to parse, but it's useless to try because you see my installer already implements that, only it does transparently so you aren't supposed to bother

again either you post a diagnose.exe report or describe your full drives' (HDD, cdrom & Co.) layout
or I wouldn't know how to help you.

Not much point as the audio tracks are on the CD so no CD, no music, cutscene audio, etc. Same with TR1.

As for the other games... no comment. Well, none allowed, anyway.

rr_carroll 09-05-10 21:43

Since I often want to research something in a bit of the game, I wouldn't care about sounds. But I assume the original author was thinking that since the Multipatch lets you play TR3 without a disk that the same is true for TR2. It's not.

TheBloodRed 09-05-10 21:49

Meh, I play TR3 with the disc and it takes a few seconds of hearing the CD drive load up and read(game frozen during all of this) just to get an audio playing. Quite annoying but at least I get audio. @_@

As for TR, I get no sound even with the disc so it doesn't matter to me. :ton:

Ward Dragon 28-05-10 07:13

I have Windows 7 64-bit and I just used version 1.6 of the installer. I needed to apply the installer patch to get the FMV's working (the logo FMV's and intro were fine, but the wolf/guide FMV had trouble playing). Now the game displays the desktop while loading, but other than that it works fine. I'm amazed at how simple it was compared to how it used to be with VDM sound, dgvoodoo and all of that. Very nice job :tmb:

thank you very much :)
that was precisely the gist of it all

btw the other one is also based on the same idea, I mean the one that actually uses dgVoodoo, VDMSound (and ssdh) in a similar way
made streamlining and hiding the details as much as I could
which is here under 32bit setup, same as here
but you'd have no use for it as it's not 64bit compliant :(

obviously upgrading from XP to Vista and 7, and x86 to x64, wasn't bound to ease technical issues
quite the opposite
the solutions you see are conceivable and practical of course only if a patchwork of sound, graphics, drive, folder settings and checkouts is anticipated and implemented somehow.

I figured I'd have trouble with older games when I upgraded, so I'm happy just to be able to play it :D I haven't played TR1 too much since I installed it last night but so far the only real issue is that it displays the desktop while loading a level, then automatically switches back to the game when it's done loading. I can totally live with that since it doesn't happen during the actual gameplay and it hasn't caused the game to crash. There's also a very minor issue of the white outlines appearing around her gunfire, but I got that on my older PC with dgvoodoo too so I'm used to it :p

Anyhow, I mention these issues in case you need the feedback but I'm perfectly happy just being able to run the game so you don't have to go out of your way trying to fix these small issues if you've got more important things to focus on :)

feedback is more than welcome anytime

yeah, saw that so often myself
hopefully, no mipmapping (F4 key), which I never use anyway, might help but I'm not sure

interesting
at that moment the gfx driver is straining to adjust to lots of redressing chores, so many nuts and bolts have to lock you're lucky if you and your pc don't end up in a parallel universe, so...
you know the relay race baton, sometimes it sticks, sometimes it just oops then bounces, only to trip the javelin thrower just as he <snip> incredible chain of <snip> downing B-52 Stratofortress squadrons flying by <garbled> ...then there were none xD

should it ever become a real pain, you could try and edit the
fullresolution= and output=
parameters in the config files, mostly cranking up the fullres setting as close as can be to your own desktop's native res, obviously within the proper 4:3 aspect ratio

but it's pretty likely the very same trick with video driver settings that the fmv patch commits is also responsible for altering your gfx card driver's response to that
it's a bit like proclaiming that: now the whole TRForums shall in 30 seconds flat shift to speak Italian only [no objection from me], then in 10 secs. all move to Japanese. No delay will be tolerated. Yeah, sure.

to get a little more serious now, the SDL docs (dosbox relies on SDL libraries for this)
http://www.libsdl.org/release/changes-1.2.html (scroll down to 1.2.10 Release Notes > Windows Notes)
SDL docs have it that it won't default to DirectX anymore, and somehow ironically that's just
Quote:

to prevent problems with certain laptops, 64-bit Windows, and Windows Vista
the patch optionally reverts to that (main reason why I long hesitated to make it and finally decided to include it in my zip, just in case)

any further development would surely require some volunteer to work the open SDL source while debugging dosbox or at least the (also open) glide patch code at the same time
probably not worth the effort :hea:

Iv been having trouble running TR with Glidos for quite some time now. When i click on start game in the Glide server box another small box pops up saying:

CD NOT PRESENT.

Place the CD in a drive and wait a little. If a splash screen comes up, select exit. Then restart the game from Glidos

My cd is an official one and not a copy so can anyone tell me how to get it to work?

Hi, I'm new here. :wve:
I downloaded and ran the installer and everything was working perfectly until I ran into some really bad slow downs in the game. It only happens with an encounter with an enemy though, but it's still unplayable. :hea:
Does anyone know any way to stop these slow downs? I have an Intel Chipset if that makes a difference. Any help is appreciated!!
