TR3 Appreciation Thread

Been replaying TR3 again
and I remember how much I simply love this game
yes its hard and unforgiving at first
but after you get acquainted with it
You can really realize how absolutely amazing this game is
its also the most beautiful of the Core games
the scenery is just stunning in alot of places

It took me from 2011 to 2016 to master the game
over those years I nibbled away at the game slowly and it was really rewarding

and now in 2019 I can replay this game 7 times in a row almost without getting tired of it

Its right up there with Last Revelation and Chronicles as my favorites of the entire franchise

Pardon all the rambling
but would love to hear your opinion and experiences with the game :D

Maverin 04-07-19 09:50

You are right. This is one of those games that get better by time, once you already know what to do in certain otherwise frustrating parts. The scenery is very unique and stunning, even with the outdated graphics.

Tomb Raider III is a real treasure.

NoahCrofRaider 04-07-19 13:40

I think Iíll always love TR3. Best game in the series to date, and probably the most balanced one with the most variety too.

BlackWolftr 04-07-19 18:05

This is one of my favorite tomb raider. I love this diversity of levels. My favorite level is Luds Gate and Nevada levels . The classics tr3 also have the largest range of weapons. I love bazooka and mp5. I have not played Tomb Raider 3 for a long time but I will do it soon :) Sry for my bad English :P

marla_biggs 04-07-19 19:57

It's perfection x

trfan16 04-07-19 19:59

TRIII is one of those games that slowly grows on me every time I replay. I still prefer the first two games over it, but this game definitely geared towards the hardcore Classic fans. Out of all of the games from the Core Design era, this game probably provides the best variety. Best variety of levels, weapons, vehicles, and even when it comes to the enemies. One of my favorite features is the ability to play levels in different orders. I'm not a big fan of losing your entire inventory in Nevada, but it does create a nice challenge for those who want to choose Nevada for last.

My one main complaint is that the difficulty of the game can be relentless at times. I'm not talking about the complexity of some of the levels or all of the unexpected death traps. I feel that the game can be a little cryptic at times. Case in point, the ticket booth puzzle in Aldwych with the Old Coin. I'm not a fan of the inflated difficulty with the inflated difficulty either with all the mazes in the game. Other than that, I love the different challenges each level offers. Definitely something that was missed in the more recent installments before Shadow.

With me at the other hand, I've ABSOLUTELY HAVE PAST SO MANY YEARS TO PLAY THE TOMB RAIDER GAMES LONGER THAN YOU HAVE YOURSELF!! :mis::cool:

Blackmoor 04-07-19 21:52

My absolute favourite of the TR's (very close with TR1).

I don't think there's a single bit I dislike (yes, even Lud's Gate that everyone moans about and Caves of Kaliya, which is misunderstood by many).

As you say it's stunning in places. I find it so beautiful and rich in diversity, and ambitious. We go everywhere and experience everything TR in this game - hot, cold, jungle, snow, inside, outside, day, night, high-tech, modern, ancient, vehicles of all sorts, dinosaurs in trees fgs, weird other creatures, strange contraptions. The list goes on and on.

Tbh, it kind of makes the modern TRs look a bit tame....................

I've said this many times before, but this is the one I'd really like to see a remake of in full modern day graphics and with some new gaming mechanics too. I think it would be truly awesome.

But would probably take a long time to develop and they don't have the appetite for remakes anyway I think.

Yes, TR3 is kind of a pinnacle of TR.

What platform did you play it on?

My opinions: this is one of those game that simulates reality pretty well apart from all the sci-fi stuff, etc.
Why is that? Play on PS1 with limited saves or even better - do a no-save run. It will then show you how fragile human life is and how careful one should be when e.g. going on a trip to the mountains - would you come unprepared and kept on sprinting instead of walking and being careful? I doubt it. :)
I wish that someone did a somewhat boring but an eye-opening playthrough when they walk casually rather than running and enjoy the scenery rather than rushing through and complaining about graphics. Especially since I consider PS1 version to be graphically superior to PC even though it has Z-buffering problems and a low resolution.

Tomb Raider 3 great game its my personal 2nd favorite behind only TR4 it is very varied compared to the first 2 games and has some of my all time favorite levels on it such as Aldwych and I loved the Antarctica level whilst some levels such as Luds Gate had me tearing my hair out in frustration because of how hard and unclear the direction was and hilariously you don't even need to pick up the Embalming fluid which Lara is asked to get to complete the level that how broken it is but I've come to love all the levels even the ones that are much harder than everything else because you just don't get this level of variety in gaming today.

Lord Insidious 23-07-19 18:47

Judith Gibbins was, imo, one of the best voices for Lara. Beautiful, seductive, classy, intelligent, and badass all around.

100%. My favourite Lara voice.

redfox45 01-08-19 02:17

After struggling through it on the PS1 I dont think I could ever play it on PC now.
That stressful rationing/hoarding of saves throughout the whole game is an integral part of the games identity for me now. The apprehension that rarely lets you relax is as much a part of it as Lara

Being able to save as much as I want would feel like using a god mode cheat lol

Not sure if thats a good or bad thing but I like it having that novelty at least.

OT: I've grown to love TR3 even more over the years. I really enjoyed RX-Tech Mines last time I played it, even though I was never much of a fan of this level before. There's always something new to appreciate when it comes to the classics, but I feel this is particularly the case with TR3 (and 4). The amount of replay value they offer is enough for me to never get bored of this series.

Those little things that chimps snack on when they are peckish? Blast away.:D

Killing gorillas in TR1 though

Gorillas are like the most gentle and wholesome creatures on the planet. Amazed that they kept it in anniversary.
Every TR1 playthrough is a no gorilla death run.

templeofxian 03-08-19 13:08

TRIII is my favourite of the series. I love the locations, the vehicles (the mine, whilst frustrating, is one of the best parts), and I think the challenge is what draws me to it - TLR is a difficult game, but III blows it out of the water in terms of how hard it is.

On the monkeys, I always feel bad killing them, but stop stealing my pickups, damnit. :p

lance6439 08-06-20 19:36

Trying to play some TRIII on Steam and for some reasons the arrow keys and a few other buttons don't work. I can't move forward with the UP cursor however the number on my keypad work for controlling Lara  how can I change these? (I'll probably think of some obvious answer while I'm at work)

Lara_Fan1 08-06-20 21:21

Have you tried going into the control panel in the pause menu?

Yes! I mastered India, South Pacific and Nevada sections pretty well, but I still need to master London and Antarctica levels. :o

In Jungle, there's no need to kill the monkeys, unless they steal your potential pickups and don't give them back. :p

I love the creatures but I wouldn't call them the most gentle creatures on the planet. They can be quite dangerous when they feel threatened.

This game (and Shadow) has the best sounds, especially in India.

Delete the Config file in the game's folder. It should reset it.

Also, the second set (the one you get when you press right - and the one that is shown in the screenshot ('user keys')) is the one you can customize. Just put the cursor onto the function you want to re-assign and press ACTION (or Enter, I can't remember). This will allow you to customize the keys.

lance6439 10-06-20 16:35

Thanks yall! suggestions worked! I did also delete the config file and once I loaded the level I was on the graphics just looked just much better for some reason and the room got darker. Can't elaborate more but it was...cool? thx yall

Maybe the gamma setting was reset by deleting the config file and this is why the graphics look darker?

lance6439 14-06-20 18:12

^ Maybe so!

WOW. I'm already on The River Ganges. This game is so beautiful and its been forever since I've last played. If only all the elements that make the classic games great were implemented into the new games.

laracroftswest 15-06-20 02:42

Spent some time this evening remastering/recreating the credits for TR3 on PC from 4:3 to 16:9 and making sure they're of higher quality. Enjoy :)

Mmmbop 15-06-20 08:33

So I've been replaying TR3 recently after a few years away. One level I want to show some serious appreciation for - Crash Site. Played through the level last night and so far it's my favourite in the game (I've done Nevada and London already too).

I just felt like it so many things going for it, and lots of interesting features that are seldom, or never, seen in other parts of the game:
- Using a hand drawn map to cross the swamp
- A bunch of NPCs that can be helpful is always a fun mechanic (if you get to the raptors before they kill the poor fellas)
- Both ways of getting the two keys for the plane. One being behind an interesting puzzle of dropping a raptor carcas in to a river to feed some piranhas. And the other being...
- YOU FIGHT A MASSIVE T.REX
- Using the rocket cannon thing on the plane
- The South Pacific Island environment itself is beautiful, and the imagery in this level is made even better with a massive crashed plane in the middle

Don't think I've ever realised how much I enjoy this level, but now I have :D

Blackmoor 15-06-20 12:18

Yeah, I love that bit of TR3 too. I love that they have a raptor up a tree, it was so scary the first time I played through it.

And I like the little compys running around.

And just the idea that we find a huge crashed plane in the jungle with survivors. It's interesting and different, or it was at the time TR3 was released.

This game is so imaginative and rich in ideas and things to see / experience.

Mmmbop 15-06-20 19:55

Oh yeah I forgot about the compies too! The plan at first was to save them, but when trying to kill Rexy using a grenade launcher... erm... mistakes were made.

Lara_Fan1 16-06-20 18:59

I love the noise Lara makes when the T-Rex kills her in this game, something I wish they added to the first and second game.
