Never heard that because when I play Crash Site its the T-Rex that croaks not LC. :) It does take what must be a thousand pistol rounds but its easy to do no scratch.
Its the raptors in the previous area that are the more dangerous opponents and I've yet to do that with just pistols keeping the soldier alive. |
These alpha images look cool as hell. Look like TR1 Lara with TR2 braid

I always liked the pink blood :)

I also suspect that being able to choose which order you play the levels in, while a cool idea, was added quite late in production. It seems to me that the order is supposed to go London - Nevada - South Pacific. Not so much based on the story, but more in terms of gameplay and how the difficulty ramps upwards in that order. |
That's not the order I randomly chose first time through, I've always play Nevada first and I've stuck to that in all my complete playthroughs ever since. London second.
I'm not entirely sure that Nevada is any harder than London. I think the difficulty in all the locations starts high in the first level and ramps up fairly evenly in each location. |

South Pacific is definitely the hardest of the three middle levels by quite some margin though, especially once you get past Coastal Village. |
I agree with that about the Coastal Village levels, first time through is very tough. The river section I usually enjoy now, but particular on the PS, first time when you do not know what's coming and where you're going exactly, with limited save crystals it is hugely frustrating.
|
isnt the game coded South Pacific, London, Nevada though? That's always the order the game shows its levels
|
No idea TBH. For me the first time through, on PS, by pure accident I did the Nevada first and halfway through its first level I did something I'd been thinking about throughout India: using the all items cheat to get 50 extra save crystals.
I disciplined myself not to use any of the extra weapons and as all the weapons are taken away at the start of the next level it all worked out perfectly. Still tough even with the extra save opportunities particularly if going for the secrets. But since then it has always been Nevada first for me then you can get over the weapon loss ASAP. I've occasionally played the South Sea Islands before London. That does make a bit more sense as regards the start of Antarctica because of the helicopter but it actually a bit ridiculous in terms of the distances involved. Logically the South Seas would be the last chosen level before Antarctica simply because of the geographic location. Likewise doing London first makes more travel sense, coming back from India, with Nevada as the second level. Also London would be the place she find more information about what happened to the sailors from The Beagle after they returned to to GB. |
I think one thing TR3 could right was location diversity. India was bright and yellowish, it really felt like a warm welcome. London was totally the opposite, it felt dark and dangerous, full of mysteries (and questionable lighting choices LMAO). South Pacific was colorful, lush and massive. Antarctica was a mixture of both, but at the same time had somewhat of a horror setting (reminded me of the Thing). The only one I didn't really like was Nevada, but even then it was still very distinct in style.
This later followed to TR3Gold btw which is also varied, colorful and simply amazing. |
Back to playing this for the first time in like a decade. Never beated it originally but I am planning on doing so now! reached Nevada (going in order NV>London>SP)
and WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW this area is so beautiful. The rocks, the waters, the sounds...especially the sounds (even if the soundtrack plays during the wrong part of the game) I am so amazed and in love. |
Yes, by today's graphical standards you'd say it looks rubbish but it oozes atmosphere and a true feeling of desert heat but also creates the feeling of coolness in those areas out of the sun and, of course, there is the invitingly clear water too.
Very much agree: the ambient sounds help take it to another level. The jump scare(s) there, even if you've played it before, still get you because it so suddenly shatters the relative peacefulness. Only thing I do not like is if you fall into the water, you are automatically swept over the waterfall and have to repeat the climb around the canyon all over again unless you've saved. |
1st part of Nevada Desert: amazing.
2nd part of Nevada (once you've activated that bomb or whatever): ugh. |
I've always wondered with that who came up with the idea of the location of the key card you have to find in that secondary area and how you have to get to it. Makes no sense - its like they ran out of even vaguely plausible ideas.

I do think that the Area 51 part is still more enjoyable than the London sections though. Maybe excluding Aldwych. |
The AREA51 sections are my fav in this game. Nevada Desert being my favorite.. I only wish there was a second desert level, maybe one at night. I’d have adored that. A boy can dream haha
|
this entire...section is so ****ing bad ass
https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14171 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14170 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14169 Lara looks like a total ****ing babe. And I was STUCK in a spot...and when I found out where I was supposed to go, lawd, that felt so rewarding. |
TR3 on PSX is very nostalgic for me and was my first batch of games for PSX. Even though TR2 PC was my first. Honestly, always preferred TR on PSX and I appreciate the pixelated lower resolution nowadays over the PC counterparts.
There’s something very special about 2 & 3 and for me hearing Judith Gibbons’, “No, that’s not right” screams classic Lara to me. However, I still think the original and TLR live up to the name TR much successfully. Plus, those two had the better vistas and exploration. I think TR3 took it too far with putting Lara in modern London in a S&M burglary outfit complete with exposed cleavage, gunning down authority figures, thus leading to her imprisonment in Nevada, USA’s Area 51 with her belly ring intact. Core turned her into an anti hero whereas in original , II, and TLR she was more in tune with her archeological Indiana Jones resemblance. II had a dash of 007 Thunderball thrown in. But 3 really wanted wanted to turn Lara into a mix of CIA or criminal. Chronicles kind of did the same with Russia and VCI levels. I think III, Chronicles, & AOD are easily the black sheep Of Core Era despite 3 selling more than TLR. I think by the time 4&5 came around most gamers had moved on from Tomb Raider to other more evolved 3rd person games. |
I love the Nevada Desert level as well. The USA has some beautiful and spectacular desert landscapes and I think they managed to capture that well even with the very primitive 90s graphics (though admittedly it looks more like Utah than Nevada, but whatever). It's the colours, those lovely pinkish orange tones.
I love the London levels even more though personally. I like how dark and gloomy they are, it perfectly captures that late 20th Century gritty post-industrial Britain feel really well. You can tell there's so many conceptual ideas that went into the games, where you can see what they were going for, but had limits because of the technology. God these games need remakes so bad. |

One of the reasons why Tomb Raider III still is my favorite Tomb Raider game. |
|
Beautiful screenshots, Lance!
They make me want to do another playthrough, soon (although I'm holding back for Giovanni's HD texture pack which will hopefully come one day). |
Yeah, It also make me want to play TR3 again. Lastly I played this game two or three years ago ;-;
|
I hated TRIII at first.
After playing it as an adult, I've come to fully understand and appreciate it. A game to play. The colors, level design, the puzzles, the difficulty and satisfaction of it all. |
So I think (evidenced by Lance’s wonderful screenshots) that TR3 is where CORE really shined with lightings. I could get stupid drunk off how great the lighting is in this game.
I love that the temple where the infada Stone was is blood red in hue. There’s the first secret cave in Nevada that is cyan in color. They played SO WELL with darkness and lightings in this game. Even these lights in HSC have a blue glow. It’s so abnormal but so beautiful. It makes it seem so normal and yet so eerie and foreboding. I love it I love it I love it. They kept this up with the future games as well. Tomb of Ancients in AOD.. that first little cave you start off in.. colors.. lighting and colors! I miss it so much. CORE TR after 3 was always so colorful, but just in the right amount. Never rainbows and craziness.. just perfect |

I love the mushy interior of the spaceship :D

But more importantly, did you swim with the Orcas, Lance?!
|
This makes me want to go home and play

- got back to playing. Really need to brighten up the screen but whenever I change the gamma setting, the game crashes. Really annoying. Currently in the South Pacific and I just love everything about this game so far. https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14305 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14306 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14301 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14302 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14303 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14300 What I find so horrifying yet cool? when Lara enters the temple and the sound of makeshift drums starts playing and then shortly the rhythm of the drums are accompanied by shouts and chants by the village people. Cool because this is a whole different culture of people you come across, however, scary because these people wont hesitate to attack because you are clearly an invader to their land. They immediately feel threatened and wont think twice about attacking you first. https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14298 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14299 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14307 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14308 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14309 |
Doubt that level or the end of Crash Site would be made now - too politically incorrect.
The South Sea islander cannibals are straight from the Boys' Own Book Of 19th & 20th Century Adventure Story Cliches. Still very atmospheric, particularly with that background soundtrack. |
^ Agreed with you!
- I don't know much I can tolerate the South Pacific and I'm still on the first level. These dinosaurs, the stomping noises, the realization that I haven't aquaired as much weapons I should have had...its getting to me. https://i.imgur.com/qxOtcsK.jpg it was only JUST NOW that I realized I can save on medipacks, bullets for my shotgun and flares when I used the trap door lever to my advantage and shoot the dinos from a distance. https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14314 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14315 edit: are my images showing for people? edit: I am hiding from the Rex in this corner and for a moment I diliberate on if there's any other hiding spaces. I then notice that I don't hear the stompings or the roars...I come out from my safe space and...its dead. LOL. No idea how. Old age? https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14316 https://www.tombraiderforums.com/pic...ictureid=14317 |
