Why was the last number on the left zero?

This has always bothered me... during the gate puzzle when leaving kuwak yaku Lara mentions the numbers 13 and 8 from the picture but says the answer to the riddle is a 0. Why is it zero? Am I stupid?

Because the devs wanted it it to be zero

The numbers on the picture are the same on the left pillar. It was damaged to look like a 13 but it was an 8. The numbers preceding 8 were 0.
