There is something supernatural. Not exactly immortal Gods like in the past games, but the Dragon Triangle area itself is supernatural, yet it's still real place.

And there is some mystery behind the island, so...calm down, Shaikh :p

Its within reality and obviously there's a very good explanation behind that mystery, same goes for Bermuda triangle. :)

Hand to hand combat..?
We've seen her using her bow and arrow and her shotgun. We've even seen her stab someone through the head with an arrow.

I'd say that's 'combat'.

"Combat" according to Karl:
  • Grab a beer.
  • Finish drinking it.
  • Then knock someone off with it.

Could it be that there's no real axe combat but more like a one move which you activate when the game allows you. Similar like the move where Lara thrusts an arrow into scavengers throat.

Yes, the shooting was sort of combat in the past games, but since now she's able to do hand-on-hand combat, plus combat with the axe etc. the shooting is not a real combat, if that makes sense. The combat now is about using the axe and hands.

Sort of, and not really.

Yes combat is more complicated now. We have ranged and melee combat. What you're talking about is melee combat, and I agree we should see more of it, but ranged combat is also combat and will always be.

there is during the air plane 2 when she grabs on to the plane with her other hand. AND getting the bow if those count as one :p

I just think it's important we see a whole variety of combat...that recent gameplay trailer with the mercenaries was really pretty dull, it was just duck, shoot, duck, shoot, there was nothing really clever and new about it (and shooting at oil puddles with fire is already pretty outdated anyway). It was just the same old popular gameplay you'd expect to see in any other mainstream game, with no creativity thrown into it. :(

The classics were never about duck, shoot, duck, shoot...there was always something more to it. It's hard to compare between then and now because everything was so different back then, but...there was always a certain sense of fear then. For example, when you would pull a switch which you know opens a door to a chamber with thugs inside, or hearing/seeing flames coming out of a flamethrower around the corner, or hearing the breathing of the scuba-divers in a dark passage, or seeing a masked figure lingering on the stands of the Opera House...it's all exactly the same type of ranged combat, but at least it was sculpted in some way, and each encounter with an enemy was different. :tmb:

From what I've seen from this game, and from what I've seen from previous Crystal games, I don't think we can expect the same. :(

But, of course, I'm waiting for more trailers and info, and I'm hoping to see something that will draw me in. :D

Lukass 16-09-12 16:40

^ Very well said! I was re-playing Tomb Raider II a week ago and I was actually scared in the Opera House level. It was a real fear. I knew that level well, but I was still scared. I've never had such feelings while playing LAU, not even one level of those games made me feel scared. I love the classics so much!
The diversity of enemies was amazing! They were pretty clumsy and stupid, but there was something...something hard to desribe about them :D I know exactly what you mean.

Have to say though, the atmopshere in the cavern demo (E3 2011) is pretty good, but it's still incomparable with the classics in terms of fear and combat. There's no combat in the cavern demo actually...hm.

Playing is different than watching.
I got different feelings from watching the camera recorded from E3 version and the HQ version.
Watching the camera recorded one made me feel better about the game somehow.

I never thought of this before, but now that you say it, it really makes me think it will be like that. I hope not, though. :/

This is exactly what I've been thinking it would be all along, I'm surprised that others seem to be under the impression that we'll be able to engage in some kind of fist-throwing, leg-swinging combat. I don't think it'll be that at all.

In my mind, it'll be the same as Resi 4 & 5. You can stun an enemy with a long-range weapon hit (arrow or bullet), then you can run in and a button icon will appear close-up, prompting a melee animation of some kind. So you effectively shoot them, run up to them while they're stunned, and press a button. That's it.

Lukass 16-09-12 17:22

No, it must be like with the bow! I swear to God. You can hold the bow and be ready to shoot an arrow anytime and anywhere in the game. I want the same with the axe. No matter if there is an emeny in front of me or not, I want to be able to do anything, including smahing the axe.

But... This is a Crystal Dynamics game.

But... I hope they're not that stupid they wouldn't allow us to "use" the pickaxe anywhere and anytime in the game. What if I want to kill the deer with the primitive axe, huh? Wait...from what's been shown the players are using only the bow.

*watches the demo*

She hasn't got the axe with her in the forest demo, so...I dunno.

Spong 16-09-12 17:34

It'd be great to have a main character with such a skill set, but I think it's too much to have all her traversal skills and a huge combat repertoire. Given their penchant for QTEs, I really wouldn't be surprised if they reared their ugly head during the hand-to-hand stuff. I think the melee stuff will be contextual animations triggered by a button-press and maybe followed by a mini-QTE to ensure success.

tomee 16-09-12 17:38

Ew...
If that really is all melee we'll have than that sucks. .__.

Lukass 16-09-12 17:39

In that case, this game would be the worst Tomb Raider ever developed, no matter how the story, graphics and I don't know what else would be great.

I don't think it's that great either, but millions of people love it in the Resi games. Fingers crossed that we do get a more 'proper' combat system. But it depends on where the emphasis goes. I know it looks like there's a hell of a lot more encounters in TR9, but surely the emphasis should still be on exploration and traversal? It is supposed to be a TR game.
